By now you can’t fail to have noticed the purple painted Hornby ‘West Country’ on the cover which is the work of modeller Richard Hall to recreate the Severn Valley Railway’s repaint of 34027 Taw Valley for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The repaint of this preserved Bulleid ‘Pacific’ has caused some controversy in the heritage movement, but we think the result is quite striking and makes this locomotive a flagship for steam preservation in 2022. Creating the repaint wasn’t without its challenges. The project started several weeks ago and since then there have been changes to the livery. Nevertheless, we are sure you will enjoy discovering how Richard went about reworking, repainting and fitting sound to a Hornby model to create the finished item. Hornby has also announced a factory made limited edition run of 34027 in its new colour scheme, but as we closed for press it had sold out leading to the production run being extended – see pages 8-9. This bumper edition of Hornby Magazine comes with a 32-page guide to modelling the BR Eastern Region – the fourth in our series of regional supplements – delivering you a huge 204-pages of modelling content this month. In the supplement you can read about the history of the region, see train formations to recreate in model form, delve into inspirational layout features and catch up on all the available ready- to-run locomotives for ‘OO’ gauge. And don’t worry – our series of regional supplements will continue to complete our coverage of all six BR regions in the 1948-1968 period.
