Let’s first understand what adultery is. According to Unger’s Bible Dictionary, adultery is “the willful violation of the marriage contract by either of the parties through sexual intercourse with a third party.” So, adultery is a sexual act with someone other than your spouse that violates your vows under the marriage contract. Adultery is a sin, because it is the breaking of a covenant made with your spouse and a vow made before God. When we make a vow before God, it is important for us to keep it because the Bible says, “If you make a vow to the Lord your God, do not postpone fulfilling it; for the Lord your God will surely require it of you, and you would incur guilt. But if you refrain from vowing, you will not incur guilt. Whatever your lips utter you must diligently perform, just as you have freely vowed to the Lord your God with your own mouth” (Deuteronomy 23:21-23). In another place in the Bible it says, “And this you do as well: You cover the Lord’s altar with tears, with weeping and groaning because He no longer regards the offering or accepts it with favor at your hand. You ask, ‘Why does He not?’ Because the Lord was a witness between you and the wife of your youth, to whom you have been faithless, though she is your companion and your wife by covenant. Did not one God make her? Both flesh and spirit are his. And what does the one God desire? Godly offspring. So look to yourselves, and do not let anyone be faithless to the wife of his youth” (Malachi 2:13-15). In the book of Mashtotz it says, “For this reason, marriage is honorable, and the bridal bed is holy,” but if the couple continuously break their vows, it means nothing is holy in that family. If one of the couple commits adultery, then he or she should know that their marriage won’t last long. Before we do something, we always should think about the consequence and about the results as to what we are going to gain or lose. Finally, I would like to share with you the words of St. Paul about the responsibilities of married couples. “But because of cases of sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does; likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. Do not deprive one another except perhaps by agreement for a set time…’’ (1 Corinthians 7:2-5). Dear faithful, I believe that our families are very precious to us, and if we want to keep that valuable gift, then we should love one another, respect one another and be honest partners. Rev. Fr. Hakob Gevorgyan And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken. (Isaiah 40:5) -2- Chairman’s Report This quarter we have been very involved in maintenance, replacements and upgrades. The walk-in freezer and refrigerator units have to be replaced including the compressors. This $25,000 expenditure is scheduled right after the bazaar. The outside parking lot lights are being replaced with new fixtures incorporating LEDs which will restore the 3 light standards as well as save maintenance and power costs. Surveillance cameras are being installed on the side and back of the church to improve safety. We recently had a vehicle crash into the railing around the boiler room door that had to be replaced. Our 325 new chairs have arrived to replace the older, well-used ones. This will enhance our wedding rental potential. We were fortunate to be able to sell most of the old chairs through Craig’s List. We will continue trying to sell the remaining chairs as well as an old tractor motor and steam table. If it isn’t being used and it isn’t nailed down, it will be sold! The Church School room walls have been scraped, sealed and painted. A temporary fix has been done on the outside to stop water from seeping in to make sure the window areas are the cause. If so, we will pour a sloping concrete path along the side. of the church. Additional enhancements include: Replacement of the Dryvit on the pillars by the portico Cleaning and reorganizing the bar room to be used for more social gatherings New computer and updated software for our treasury function and recordkeeping Modification to the coat room for more efficient utilization Upgrading the website We have had a very positive response for our 80th Anniversary Celebration and it should truly be a gala affair. I believe that all will greatly enjoy reminiscing about the long history of our church these past 80 years. We have started strategic planning for each pillar. In the Financial Pillar our goals over the past nine years were first to break even; then to pay off our debts; and finally to generate some positive income. This income, the earnings from endowments plus the monies from the SPECTRA Energy pipeline project will now pay for 22% of our normal operating expenses. Our long-term goal is to generate enough interest to pay 35 to 50% of our annual operating expense to relieve the burden on the parishioners. This will require major growth in our investments and endowments and any outside income sources we can identify. (Cell tower has been tried with no success.) The hall rentals have been light for the last few years. Our reduction in rentals was due to a reduction of current reception sizes since we are very competitive if the group is over 250. The purchase of Melrose Country Club by the Koreans eliminated rentals to us. We have reduced prices for Friday, Sunday and weekdays and will consider a special rate for weddings under 200 people. Hopefully, this will induce more rentals. The Membership Pillar will be covered in the next two meetings. We will break down the groups we are seeking and will develop and implement strategies for each group. The delegates and I will be attending a special Diocesan Assembly at the Diocese in New York in September to discuss several matters of importance. As always, the Council is open to suggestions, comments or questions. We are here to serve our parish. REAL ESTATE I wish to inform all of our parishioners that our treasurer, Dick 2003 South Easton Road, Suite 108 Weinsheimer, has resigned because of his health as well as Doylestown, PA 18901 Each office is Independently Owned and Operated necessary care-giving for his wife, Evelyn. Dick’s twenty- some years as treasurer were one of the main reasons for our Men’s Club success and his handling of the “200 Club” along with Larry Der Hagopian furnished our church with over $200,000 during that period. Dick was meticulous and efficient in all of his work and dependable at all times. It was something that I felt confident about and I am so grateful for his enduring efforts. He will be sorely missed. On the positive side, I am happy to announce that a very capable replacement has taken his place, namely, Mickey Paretchan. We are so fortunate to have someone like Mickey who was our secretary about twenty years ago. Thank you, Mickey, for being there in our time of need. As Chairman, I am going to remain doing what I can under the conditions of my duties at home. I have waited a long time for a successor to my post without any response from anyone. I will continue to serve my church until such time when I cannot. There never seems to be enough time to relax, visit and travel before the rush of the fall sets in. Someone once told me that even when only two Armenians gather together, it is special time. On Friday, August 15, eleven of us met at Winterthur Museum to take in the Downton Abbey exhibit and tour the DuPont Mansion and grounds. We also look forward to visiting the Grounds for Sculpture in New Jersey to take in the Seward Johnson Retrospective. The fall schedule will keep us all busy. We look forward to celebrating the 80th anniversary of our church. There will be no rest for the weary as we prepare for our annual fall bazaar. Many of us will also participate in the Bible study as we examine the Book of Mark. All of our activities are open to all with no special invitations. If you have not participated in the past, why sit back? Come out and get to know us. CHURCH SCHOOL NEWS Gail Lulejian “Train up children in the way they should go and when they are old they will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6 Our Church School is well underway and bulging at the seams with newcomers. As you can see by our classrooms, we’ve been busy over the summer redecorating for our Infants, Toddlers, Little Sprouts and Preschoolers. A very special thank you goes to Garo and Cece Garibian for their generous donation for our classroom décor. Thank you to Der Hayr, the Parish Council, Nancy Hovnanian, Maggie and Tyrone, and especially Amy Paretchan for their hard work in bringing it to fruition. Fortunately, to help with the growing population many teachers, aides and huggers have stepped up to help. (The Lord provides.) Patti Smith has taken on the 6-7th grade class and Stephanie Vartanian, Armine Keshgegian, Patty Alexanian, Sabrina Garibian, Seta Pica, and Bette Kapeghian, our story teller, will be looking after the Little Sprouts. By press time we hope to have many more on board to assist this growing population. We are continuing the theme set by the diocese of “Living the Gospel.” Our teachers have been encouraged to broaden the understanding of the children about the message of Jesus coming to earth and giving up his life for our salvation, each appropriate to their age levels. Kim Santerian has offered her talents in overseeing our special events this year, freeing me up with the opportunity to re- establish Assembly. It will focus on teaching some songs and hymns, and the liturgy, along with a brief Bible message. We are committed to making our church service better understood by our youth in order that participation in the Divine Liturgy becomes more meaningful. Another program renewal will be for our oldest students called “Teen Seminar” under the supervision of Nancy Basmajian. They too will learn and understand our Liturgy better as Nancy has numerous knowledgeable men and women, along with herself, who will guest lecture this group offering them a diverse education during their last years in Church School. They will be enriched by the teachings offered as they prepare to move on in their lives whether to college or a work environment. And last but most importantly are the dedicated teachers who continue to provide our children with years of experience, terrific teaching (using our continually updated curriculum provided by our diocese) and love of the children: Berjoohy Murray, Grace Meranshian, Merle Santerian, Amy Terkanian, Patti Smith, and outgoing teacher Talene Peckjian. Our Language School continues to flourish under the leadership of Yn. Anna and a dedicated staff as well. Angel Tookmanian has returned to the classroom and is teaching Advanced Western Armenian. Our Eastern and Western Armenian staff includes Seda Hovhannisyan, Silva Hovhannesian, and Marianna Majian. May the Lord continue to bless them all for their servant hearts! Stop by and visit one of our classes sometime. You will surely be moved by the experience as you see what our kids are learning! -5- About Our Family This last season held a mixture of sadness and delight, and as a church family, we shared in both the joys and sorrows with our sisters and brothers....We welcomed a new bride to our church family with the marriage of our Altar Server, John Alexanian and Marcelle Chamavonian. Congratulations to the newlyweds and their families…. It gives us great pleasure to congratulate hometown son, Vahan Paretchan, son of Tanya and Mickey, who is the executive producer of a new series called “Sequestered.” The Crackle original series premiered with six episodes and is now available for viewing by going to www.crackle.com.... Words fail as we extend profound sympathy to Patty and Vaughn Alexanian on the passing their beloved daughter, Stephanie. It was a loss that affected our whole parish and especially those who have been working closely with Patty as she became more involved in church activities. May God be ever-present in their lives. Please continue to keep them in your prayers….. Congratulations to Natalie Movsesian, daughter of Leslie and Paul, who has been horseback riding since she was a young teen. She competes as an Equestrian and has now won ribbons in Hunters and Equitation….It was a “hoot ‘n holler” wedding as many of our church family witnessed and celebrated the marriage of our church secretary, Maggie Miller to Steve Parker. With the bride in her cowboy boots and both in their cowboy hats, arriving on a Harley, it was a wedding we’ll never forget. Country music reigned!….On the mend from various medical issues: Anne Terkanian, Angel Tookmanian, Butch Kumkumian, Alyce Jilajian, Dorie Aslanian and Roman Radynsky. Hopefully, by now they are enjoying improved health….Congratulations to Alice and Karnig Torossian who welcomed grandchild #10. Aline was born to their daughter Nelly and her husband Billy and she joined 3 sisters and 4 brothers, making it an even 4 & 4. All we can say is WOW!!! Atchkerneet Looys to all!.... With great sadness we mourn the passing of many in our church family: George Nazarethian, Ron Gooshian, John Tatoian – they will long be remembered…..Our sympathies to their families as well as to Merle Santerian whose dear mother, Rose Serabian, passed away at the remarkable age of 104; to Nancy Hovnanian and family whose father, Diran Shakarjian, passed away; and to Barbara Papazian whose son, Peter, passed after a lengthy illness. May the Holy Spirit be of great comfort to all of them……Two of our gentlemen celebrated milestone birthdays just before summer’s end: Brian Hoyle (70) and Larry Der Hagopian (85) May good health and happiness be theirs in the years ahead….. Welcome back to Der Hakob, Yn. Anna and all the pilgrims who accompanied them on a trip to Armenia. We hope to hear about some of their favorite parts of the trip……Fall is upon us and with it comes a full roster of church activities, both faith-based and social. Why must it be that only when we’re lonely And hopes are dim, we call on Him. Why don’t we call on Him before we lose our way To count our blessings and thank Him while we may? We call on Him when no one else will answer, We ask of Him a reason to go on When our cup of joy becomes a cup of sorrow, Filled to the brim, we call on Him. Why don’t we call on Him before we lose our way To count our blessings and thank Him while we may? -Sung by Elvis Presley -Words and music by F. Karger, B.Weisman, S. Wayne At what times do we turn to God? For too many people, it’s only at difficult times in their lives, or when some terrible tragedy has occurred, as they look for support, strength and guidance. Although we usually think of Elvis Presley as a hip-swinging, rock-‘n’-roll singer, Elvis also recorded much Gospel music. And this song, sung by Elvis (as well as by other artists), addresses the question of when we call on God. The song tells us that He is certainly there for us when storm clouds gather, to light our darkest day, or when we’re lonely, looking for a reason to go on, when no one else will answer. But the song reminds us that such occasions are not the only times to call on Him. We should call on Him even before we lose our way, just to count our blessing and thank Him. God wants to be a part of every aspect of our lives, not just during the bad times, but also the good. God created us, and everything we have, out of His immense love for us. Every ability or talent that we possess, everything we own, all the happy experiences that we enjoy, all that is good in the world, comes from God. We should be thanking Him for all His good gifts, grateful for all He has given us, and praising His greatness. We do all this in prayer. Prayer is basically conversing with God, speaking to Him and listening back. It doesn’t have to be in a formal place, like a church. We don’t have to be in a formal position, such as on our knees with our hands joined together. It could be in the car while we’re driving, when we’re out taking a walk, or just when we’re relaxing on the front porch or back deck of our house. God wants to be our best friend – He is the best friend we could ever have – and talking with Him should be just as easy, just as simple, and just as often as it is with our best friend who lives next door. I guess Elvis knew that. Why shouldn’t we? -9- In Lieu of Flowers MARY PARETCHAN Robert and Lorraine Damerjian E l e anor and Richard Silvestri Steven Barsamian Gary and Susan DerHagopian E d w ard and Hilda Soorikian Virginia Kouyoumjian L a r r y a n d Jeanette Der Hagopian M r . and Mrs. Temoyan NEW TOTAL: $5,630.00 Larry and Kim Der Hagopian G e orge and Anne Terkanian Albert and Valerie Der Pilbosian E t h e l Terzian ARMENA BARTOW Helen Dervishian E d ward Terzian Virginia Kouyoumjian R i c h a r d a n d Diane Doudoukjian A n g e l T o o k m a n i a n NEW TOTAL: $1,290.00 George and Ana Endrigian T o r comian Family Alice Endrigian A lice and Karnig Torossian JOHN DER PILBOSIAN John and Opy Eskandarian Robin Tourigian and Richard Kerbowski Greg and Maria Javardian D r . a n d M rs.
