The Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) is an annual Scouting and Amateur Radio event spon- sored by the World Scout Bureau of the World Organization of the Scout Movement where Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Girl Guides from all over the world speak to each other via Amateur Ra- dio. Since 1958, when the first Jamboree on the Air was held, millions of Scouts have met through this event. Many contacts made during JOTA have resulted in pen pal relationships and links between Scout troops that have lasted many years. Moreover, the Voortrekkers in South Africa and Namibia will participate in CQ Hou Ko- ers on 20 October. Amateur Radio Today Changes Frequencies on 28 October From Sunday 28 October, Amateur Radio Today will be transmitted on new frequencies - Sundays 08:00 UTC (10:00 CAT) on 7 205 kHz and 17 760 kHz; Mondays 16:30 UTC (18:30 CAT) on 4 895 kHz. Reception reports are invited. We are particularly interested in reports of the 4 895 kHz transmission on Mondays at 16:30 UTC as the frequency is close to the proposed new amateur allocation near 5 MHz. Reception reports from all areas in South Africa would be useful in our bid to ICASA for frequencies pilot studies. Send rapports to [email protected]. A former UK anti-aircraft tower/fort (called Roughs Tower) located in the North Sea was occupied by a retired army major Roy Bates and his family in 1967. Major Bates declared the fort an independent sovereign state from the UK and renamed it Sealand on 2 September 1967. Bates established Sealand as a nation in 1975. Sealand had its own constitution, flag, National Anthem, stamps, passports and currency. There were even a few DXpeditions to Sealand - 1SLA1 (2000 by a Dutch group) and S1A (1982 by a German group). However, it has been reported that Major Bates passed away on 9 October at the age of 91 in a care home in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, after a long battle with Alzheimer's. His wife Joan is now expected to take over the rule of Sealand. Here are some interesting URLs to read about the history and view pictures of the Principality of Sealand: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2216596/Retired-army-major-occupied-fortress- North-Sea-declared-sovereign-principality-Sealand-dies-aged-91.html http://www.sealandgov.org http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Principality_of_Sealand http://www.southgatearc.org/news/july2006/sealand_appeal.htm NH8, Swains Island (Press Release) The following was posted on the NH8S Web page www.nh8s.org on 9 October [edited]: "Craig and I would like to thank everyone who worked us from Swains. We made 105 500 QSOs which made many hams happy. This is not a record, but something we and the team are very proud of. We had a great time but are glad to be back home with our families. "Amateur radio is the most exciting of all technological hobbies" Page 3 October 2012 HF Happenings This was truly a remarkable trip in many ways. We are very proud of our team as they performed remarkably well under unbearable heat. As you may know by now, it was 125° F on the beach in the sun. To put up antennas in the loose sand and heat was quite a challenge. During the duration of the trip, the crew walked many miles to get to the operating stations four times a day. Then they worked the endless pileups, which can be stressful. Never did they complain about the job before them, making QSOs in those hot tents. Every crewmember experienced some type of heat reaction at one time or another. Some members endured other injuries as well, and two were hospitalised, so we had our challenges. Everyone is home and fine now.. To Swains owners, the Jennings family, you and your group were an enormous help to us. The Island support team of thirteen native men and women worked tirelessly to see that our needs were met. We could not ask for better hosts. Including the off-island support crew, it took a total of 43 people to make this all happen. QSL cards are ready to be printed and should be distributed in a few months. If you need a card right away, please go to our OQRS link for your QSL card. We want to thank all of our equipment sponsors; your equipment worked flawlessly. And to the foundations, clubs and individuals who helped fund this trip; we are most appreciative of your generosity. These trips to remote places are so expensive that it would not be possible without your support. It was a great honour for Craig and me to lead such an extraordinary team of highly ex- perienced operators. This was not the easiest trip any of us have been on, and you guys are the greatest.
