To some it is merely a place of higher education or a place to earn a degree, but to most it is a place filled with many memories. In Wartburg's 150 years of existence, it has been a cornerstone in many of its graduates' lives. Every year numerous alumni return with their children to show them the traditions of their youth and remember their days as students at Wartburg. Many recall Homecoming, Wartburg Choir, or dorm life as their fondest memories. For others, it may be the time spent worshiping in the Wartburg Chapel or cheering on the football team to a victory over Luther. When they return to Fortress Theme I campus, they may find some things have changed, but the most important things have stayed the same. The excitement that is feU the morning of Outfly, during the silent prayers at Eucharist, and during move-in day freshman year will never change. They are forever etched into Wartburg's history and future. So whether it is Then or Now, Wartburg College will always be a place filled with wonderful memories. Typical tricks ensued as uppcrclassmen tried to foil the underclassmen with false alarms, but to the relief of many, the day finally came. Before the crack of dawn on October 3^^, the scantily clad Men's Cross-Country team announced the start Abovc:A group of students join arms as they sing the Wartburg Loyalty son< of Outfly, screaming their way from dorm to dorm. Slowly but surely, students groggily headed towards the Victory Bell, where President Ohlc and the Wartburg College Pep Band greeted them happily. "Before the festivities can begin," stated President Ohle, "Student Body President Matt McNamara must be 11001 found." Money-hungry students searched madly for Matt, driven by the promise of a reward. Meanwhile, students at the victory bell entertained Chris Bork('03), Robyn Lynn('03),and Adam Niclson('03) smoke cigars on the morning ofOutfly, which] is a long running traditon at Wartburg. one another with their crazy costumes and I antics. The "Wartburg Swim-Team" impressed the growing number of students with their aquatic skills and creative swimwear, winning the ETK's "Best Outfly Costume Contest." Before long, a student found Matt, who had been hiding in the new Ralston-Hoover Stadium, and Outfly officially began with the ringing of the Victory Bell. Many students continued the morning with breakfast served by volunteer faculty and staff. Other students returned to their beds, excited by the prospect of a day of rest. Later in the day students participated in events hosted by ETK and other groups on campus, including a Tug- of-War, Weakest Link Game Show Competition, and a movie night at the Palace Theater.
