For the second straight year, over 1O,OOO students applied for admission. of this group, 58o/o were offered admission, and 28o/o ol them chose to matriculate, an increase of 4o/o over last year's yield. A record-breaking 1,641 highly quatified freshmen registered for classes' Their mean SAT-! ,"or" topped f2OOlnt for the second year in a row; 42o/o of the Class of 2OOO graduated in ine top tenth of their high school class, and 717o graduated in the top fifth; and there are 34 new Merit schotars. These statistics herp confirm what we see in the marketplace: GW has become increasingly attractive to top students. One measure of university success is freshman to sophomore retention and graduation rates. ln this afea, the percent is steadily improving' Freshman to sophomore retention reached a University high of 91 o/otor the class entering in 1gg4. Of note is that almost nine out oi ttn seniors who attended Commencement in May reported being very satisfied with their undergraduate education' their overall undergraduate experience, and with the quality of teaching' Obviously' student satisfaction, student quality, and retention rates are highly correlated' we are proud of the university's continued success recruiting terrific students' However, recruiting and retaining these students is not only an Admissions task--it takesthecoltectiveeffortoftheentireGWcommunity. while the profile of the class of 2ooo is commendable, it does not tell us' much study habits, their concerns' and their future about our undergraduates--their aspirations. Noidoes it inform us about how representative our freshmen are of students across the nation' For the past thirty years, the cooperative lnstitutional Research Program (clRP) at ucLA has been conducting an annual survey of American freshmen' Based on information obtained from over 324,ooo freshmen who entered college in the fall of 1995, they found that new students are increasingly disengaged from their academic experienc e, are focused more on the future, and are concerned about financing their undergraduate education' 1 from the academic experience: Disengagement \|VL chloRmPe fwoournkd, tthalakti nhglicg whli irstihct iht"ohroe.l i rrs ntee naicohrse rasr,e m sape reeentcidnoignid ga htl eiags hste otaimfc hoeen res,t-sut hdhiryodimn ogef , otahr neddo iennggaging in extracurricutar "oaiiion, respondents reported being frequently bored in class! profile of GW freshmen' one may assume that the national tGreivnedn dthoee sh nigoht aacpilap"diluye omtoinic gG Wth es tculad_esns ios.f 2H0o0w0e,v seur,p pdoartat tchoel lencatteiodn afrlo tmre nGdW' Results undergraduatesd, i;ilri;JAuring Coroni"r lnauguiation' the summer orientation and from a survepyr ogri;, indicate that over half thL incoming freshmen said they need registration better stud; and habits' imlroving test-taking skills' special help devetoping compet'efnifcf'y . over one-trriro n"ud herp expressing their and improving matheriaticar ;o'p'"tt"nsion' and improving their ability to ideas in writing, improving ,eafanin"gie percentages represent new students who have fr""trupn-tt. speak in class not attended anY classes!
