Last month, Apple not only lifted the lid on the next generation of its operating systems, but we also got a sneak peek at the new Apple Silicon M2 system-on-a-chip, and the first two Macs to feature this amazing processor; the new MacBook Air and a refreshed 13-inch MacBook Pro. The MacBook Air is a radical change from its predecessor. The wedge shape is gone, but it’s still as thin and portable as ever. It has an 18-hour battery life, a gorgeous liquid retina screen and the MagSafe charging cable is back (hurrah!) The MagSafe charger, which connects to the notebook magnetically and safely pulls away should the cable get tugged during charging, is one of Apple’s great innovations. Why they sought to drop it is anyone’s guess, but it’s great to see they seem to have changed their mind. The operating systems are looking good too. Come the autumn, we can update our Apple gear to macOS Ventura, iOS 16, iPadOS 16 and watchOS 9; assuming they’re recent enough to meet the system requirements. These updates are, as always, free. Apple never charges for new operating systems, and hasn’t for some time. Take a look at our cover story starting on Page 10 to see what they have in store, and if you can’t wait to try them out, sign up for Apple’s beta program at https://beta.apple.com. You can then install public betas of all these operating systems from July, but remember, at this time they’re unfinished and still contain bugs. It’s best to avoid installing betas on Apple gear you need to rely on. Elsewhere in the issue, we have some great tutorials to help you use your Apple gear and its current operating systems, and also reviews of the latest and greatest peripherals, software and games.
