Mortham Secretary of State We are pleased to provide the 49th annual edition of the Florida Libra?), Directory with Statistics. This edition, which includes a comprehensive listing of libraries of all types in Florida, along with statistical information on the public libraries, is a celebration of our achievement. After 36 years of providing state aid to public libraries, we now are providing that assistance to all 67 counties. The fireworks on the cover symbolize our excitement over this achievement. With today's emphasis on measurable evaluation of programs, the collection and use of accurate performance and resource data are increasingly important. Each public library in Florida submits a statistical report to the State Library that provides information on budgets, collections, and services. Compilation and analysis of the data is conducted by the Research Unit in the Bureau of Library Development. This unit also provides tailored data reports and technical assistance upon request. Public library data are used by local library managers and public administrators for planning, evaluation, and resource allocations. These data are also important for academic and governmental researchers investigating and developing public policy regarding information transfer and access. The information is also submitted to the Federal-State Cooperative System for Public Library Data, a program of the National Center for Education Statistics. Florida's quality library statistics are the result of a collaborative effort between local public libraries and the State Library of Florida. I along with my staff in the Division of Library and Information Services welcome your comments and suggestions regarding this important annual publication. 1998 Florida Library birectory with Statistics Table of Contents Florida Division of Library and Information Services Library Organizations, Councils, and Associations State Library Council 1 Library Services & Technology Act Advisory Council 2 Florida Library Network Council 4 DLIS Staff Directory 7 DLIS Statistics 8 Florida Library Information Network (FLIN) 9 Library Associations 13 Graduate Library Schools 14 Networks and Multitype Library Cooperatives 15 Florida State Documents Depositories 22 Directory of Libraries Public Libraries 25 Academic Libraries 85 Special Libraries 105 Institutional Libraries 135 School Library Media SupeMsors 143 Public Library Data Statistical Summary, Narrative 150 Selected Historical Data 151 Public Library Data Tables Alphabetical Key to Tables of Public Library Statistics 152 Table 1.1 Access to Library Service: Number of Outlets 154 Table 1.2 Access to Library Service: Square Feet; Sunday Hours 156 Table 2.1 Library Staff: Full-Time Equivalents 158 Table 2.2 Library Staff: Salaries and Benefits 160 Director and Assistant Director 162 Table 2.3 Library Staff: Salaries Table 2.4 Library Staff: Salaries Branch Head & Department Head 164 Table 2.5 Library Staff: Salaries - Reference/Adult Services and Systems/Automation 166 Table 2.6 Library Staff: Salaries Cataloger and Children's Librarian 168 Table 2.7 Library Staff: Salaries - ILL Librarian and Starting Librarian 170 Table 3.1 Operating Income: Totals by Source 172 Table 3.2 Operating Income: Percent by Source 174 1998 Florida Library Directory with Statistics, Table of Contents, contd.
