It contains information as submitted by local public libraries on their 1994 Annual Report forms. The contents include: analytical tables; statistical summary overview; operating and materials expenditures adjusted for inflation; Texas library per capita data compared to U.S. averages; operating income per capita; income and percent of population served by type of library; salary and staffing data; number of public libraries by state; public library income from all sources; 1993 operating expenditures by state; direct expenditures per capita; circulation per capita; reference transactions per capita; and rank order of Texas public libraries by population served. Results show that Texas libraries imor red in same key categories from 1993 to 1994. Income and expenditure increased in all categories. Library visits increased by approximately 5% and reference transactions per capita increased 7.7%. Libraries added a total of 159 new paid staff positions in 1994, 35 of which were MLS librarians. Several other measures showed their first decline in several years. Circulation per capita declined almost 5%, and the number of book items per capita and total items decreased. While spending has increased in Texas public libraries from 1985 to 1994, the increases have not kept pace with inflation. Texas trails the nation in library support, spending only $11.09 per capita for public library service compared to the national average of $19.16.
