Although, as an element of folklore, the vampire can be traced to the remotest periods of human history and prehistory, its embodiment in art and literature dates to a surprisingly recent period—no earlier than the eighteenth cen- tury. But since that time, the vampire has proven to be an extraordinarily malleable motif, serving as a symbol for a wide range of philosophical, social, cultural, and even political attitudes on the part of authors, filmmakers, and other artists. Encyclopedia of the Vampire seeks to trace the vampire in its multifaceted incarnations through entries that focus on authors, individual literary works, films, and television shows, and thematic topics that study the vampire in the context of religion, folklore, the theater, and other subjects. The entries have been written by leading authorities on the subjects in question. Many entries feature a bibliography referring the reader to secondary sources where more information on the topic can be found. Complete bibliographical information on primary and secondary sour- ces is provided in the entries on authors and individual works, but is truncated in the topical entries. The year of birth and death of authors and other individuals that are the focus of individual entries is provided, although this information is lacking for some contemporary figures. The volume begins with an alphabetical list of entries and a guide to related topics. At the rear of the volume is a general bibliography listing important critical works on the vampire in literature, media, and other areas. A comprehensive index concludes the work. It is hoped that Encyclopedia of the Vampire will provide the most exhaustive and up-to-date information on all aspects of the vampire in literature, media, and world culture. —S. T.
