Strange and U nexplained Physical Phenomena Jerome Clark -1 BURLINGAME PUBLIC LIBRAHt ^ ■ v For Reference 480 PRIMROSE ROAD BURLINGAME. CA 94010 Not to be taken from this room Digitized by the Internet Archive in 2018 with funding from Kahle/Austin Foundation https://archive.0rg/details/encyclopediaofstOOOOclar About the Author Jerome Clark, an investigator of anomalous claims and occurrences for nearly three decades, is vice president of the J. Allen Hynek Center for UFO Studies (CUFOS) and editor of its magazine International UFO Reporter. CUFOS, one of the preeminent UFO organizations in the world, was founded in 1973 by Sherman J. Larsen and Northwestern University astronomer Flynek, for 20 years the chief consultant on UFO matters to the U.S. Air Force's Project Blue Book. Clark formerly edited Fate, a popular monthly devoted to anomalies and the paranormal. Clark was an early proponent of theories that sought psychological and social explanations for extraordi¬ nary events. In his first book, 1975's The Unidentified, written with Loren Coleman, Clark argued that encounters with extraordinary beings are more likely to be internally than externally generated. Though such ideas became widely popular among anomalists, Clark himself eventually rejected such theories for their "grand pronounce¬ ments and inattention to empirical evidence." Instead, he urges a cautious approach tied closely to intellectual modesty, which acknowledges the limitations of human knowledge, and an open-ended agnosticism about claims that, however interesting and suggestive, can be neither proven or disproven. Born November 27,1946, in Canby, Minnesota, Clark was educated at South Dakota State University and Moorhead State University. His other books include UFOs in the 1980s, Tlie Emergence of a Phenomenon: UFOs from the Beginning Through 1959, and, with J. Gordon Melton and Aidan A. Kelly, Neiv Age Encyclopedia. jyv' . a'iy'' > 1 V V— / 4 y *‘' r , *■ ■r; -■■■■of - - • ■ i-i? lil^- \ * K ^ >■ ■ t V- ih^ . i’^ •#, ■"* 'i: 1 r-* ■ ' €■ r’■f. ’'.**' 1 ! ■•> i, < V" ■ff, 7.
