Beck Descendants by Mona Mann Beck Descendants Descendants of Christian BECK Generation No. 1 1. CHRISTIAN1 BECK1 was born November 12, 1798 in Langnau, Canton Berne, SWITZERLAND, and died January 25, 1882 in Ithica, Gratiot Co., Michigan. He married MAGDALENA (MAUDE) HARMON2 Abt. 1820. She was born 1800 in Sainens, Dung, Dept. Doubs, FRANCE, and died Bet. 1850 - 1860 in Fulton Co., Ohio. Notes for CHRISTIAN BECK: Beck and his family emigrated bringing also apprentice locksmith, Christian Rychener. They left from the port of Havre sometime in the spring of 1833. Sailed on the ship Freidonia with 152 other passengers. Arrived in NY on Jun 28, 1833. They traveled the "super highway of it's day" to Ohio: A riverboat up the Hudson River to Albany, a mule-towed canal boat west on the Erie Canal to Buffalo, a sailing vessel across Lake Erie to Cleveland, and a second canal boat inland on the Ohio and Erie Canal to Massillon, leaving just a few-mile cart ride or cross-country hike to Wayne County, OH. "Christian Beck, the first minister of the settlement (German Twp.) was interested in the movement (of John Holdeman and followers) but his views on temperance (especially tobacco and strong drink) were not strict enough to allow him to have fellowship with the Holdeman party which stressed total abstinence." Stoltzfus, Grant, Ohio and Eastern Conference, Herald Press, 1969. Sons Peter and Gottlieb stayed in the (German Township) community and with the Mennonite church. The rest of the family moved to Gratiot County, Michigan and are no longer Mennonite. Both brothers married daughters of Johannes and Mary Wyse Nofziger. From Karla Wyse-- "Christian Beck, born in Switzerland on 12 Nov 1798. Died at his son John's home in Ithica, Mich. on 25 Jan 1882. He was buried stright north of Middleton, Mich. The cemetery is east of the road. He and son John are buried in the southeast corner. Both names on the same stone. Christian Beck died 25 Jan 1882, age 83 years 8 months 13 days. The epitaph -- "The Lord to give him rest. The parting gives us pain. But we only say farewell until we meet again." He was married to Maude or Magdalena Harmon who had a daughter (probably retarded) that was born out of wedlock. At about 15 she disappeared into the woods, near their home in section 14 of German Township. She is thought to be killed and eaten by wild animals. They buried a son Gottleib in Switzerland. They also buried a child at Massilon, Ohio, during emigration to Wayne County. Then in Wayne 1 Beck Descendants County they buried a child that was run over by a wagon. Christian was a minister and settled 3/4 mile south of the Lauber Hill Reformed Mennonite Church. By trade he was a blacksmith and locksmith. For some reason, unknown now, he lost his membership in the Amish Mennonite Church here. His wife Magdalena died in 1860 at age 60 and buried on the home farm. He left Ohio and spent his last years at Ithica, Mich. with his son. Wish we knew why he left the church, his home, and buried there when she is buried here. They had another son and gave himthe name of the one they buried in Switzerland." ---from a type-written note in the possession of Jesse Wyse, may have been written by him. Christian Rychener was apprenticed to Christian Beck, an Amish Mennonite minister. Rychener belonged to the Reformed church but during this time was influenced by Beck and later joined the Amish Mennonite Church sometime between the year before he immigrated and his marriage. Christian Rychener immigrated with Beck and his family. --Rychener, John, "Christian Rychener (1813-1899) From Bern, Switzerland to Ohio", pub. in Mennonite Family History, April 1999. Beck and his wife and six children emigrated by ship from Le Havre,FR to Wayne County, OH where they lived for two years before moving to German Township where they helped to colonize the area.
