Preface ‘The materia in this book Isa culmination of nearly 100 years of experience in the ar of Xing Vi Quan by Master Wang Ii Wu (2.448), over 40 years of ‘experience forcach of Wang's students, Zhang Bao Yang #8), Wang ia Yu (fe), and Fre Ya Q) 74744), and over two years vf wllalunation between Wings students, myself and Tim Cartmell, This matetal i staightorward, ‘practical, casyto learn, znd time tested, Tim Cartmell and [fist met Zhang Bao Yang on the Sixth vf October, 1992, in Beijing, China. The old photographs fascinated ne, especially a series of photos showing, Wang fi Wu performinga set of exercises. asked abour the photographs and Zhangexplained that hese werea st of sixteen health and body strengthening, exercises that his teacher had studied aver his lifetime of Xing Vi Quan practice and experience with Chinese medicine. His teacher had systeratized the se land taught them to each of his Xing ¥i Quan stulentsas foundational taining for Xing Vi. Zhang askedit Iwould like ta sec the wel and allowed me to film him practicing al of the exereises, I was very impcessed mith he simplicity of the exercises ard the thoroughness ofthe exetese ct ‘hang Bao Yang and his classmates were very 9pon andl generous curing our first meeting, Zhang not only showed us the sixteen healing exercises and several of thelr Xing Vi Quan forms, but he allowed me to copy all of the photographs he had collected o hig teacher and other Xing Vi Quan masters ‘duping his 40 years of studying there, Timand lweresoimpressed with Zhang and his knowledge of Xing Vi Quan thaton October L1th we went pack - visit him to-conductz more in cepth interview, Darang this ineeview we gathered ‘more informatian about Wang Ji Wu and ais Xing ¥i Quan. 2s impressed a5 Tim and] were about Zhang Bao Yang's knowledge of Xing Wi, we were both: equally impressed with his personality and character, Tian ‘commented many times about the danity of Zhang’s spoken worded bisablity toexpress himself verbally. Zhang and Warg felt that the exercises should he explained in a very straightforward, useful manner and so they wanted meto use their explanations of theexereses. Retwveen Novernber 1998 and March 1994, 1 put together al of the translated injonmation, w:ote a biography of Wang Ji Wa's Xing ¥i lineage, added some material Tin. had written about Xing W's standing araetiee. and printed a second rough draft ofthe book. In April 1994, Tim Carimell and Iwent back to visit Zhang Bao Yang and Wang Jin Yu and showed them the second daft, Zhang and Wang wete both please with the way the hook was shaping up.
