This will stop the ink leaking onto the design behind. Ci dU TUUEZEF CICK GS @® Back and forth The simplest way to colour: draw short lines next to each other, back and forth without lifting your pencil. Keep the strokes in the same direction for each section, but experiment with different directions — diagonal is most effective, but try verticals. 4 WWW.GATHERED.HOW @ Broad shading Rather than holding your pencil upright, lie it flat and use the side of the lead, rather than the point, to create larger areas of light colour. This is a great technique for subtly layering different colours over each other or for filling large areas quickly. © Cross hatching Draw a set of separate parallel lines in one direction, then lift the pencil and draw another set of lines at right angles over the first set. This is a good way to shade different areas, or for layering up two different colours to make a new colour. OC ee SWEET THINGS 6 Sugary indulgence without the calories — the perfect treat! Sadnar?e PATTERN 8 Circles, swirls, angles and more! STAT YOU CREATIVITY Add your own elements to turn these illustrations into a personal work of art © Layers of colour For really intense colour, gently go over the same area multiple times with the same pencil. Don’t just scrub really hard with the pencil as that might tear the paper (and if you really overdo it you'll end up snapping the pencil lead, too). © Mixing colour Don't just rely on the colours that you already have — mix your own, particularly if you want a realistic effect. For grass or trees, for instance, don’t use the green pencil — use yellows and blues to make your own green, and add a little ready-made green too.
