The period covered extends from the Renaissance to the aftermath of the Peace of Westphalia in 1648,afterwhichthepapacywasreducedtoamainlyspiritualrole. BasedonnewresearchinItalianandotherEuropeanarchives,thebook concentrates on the factions at the Roman court and in the College of Cardinals.
