COUNTERTRANSFERENCE RELATED SUBIECTS Selected Papers HAROLD F. SEARLES, M.D. wi Countertransference and Related Subjects ~ pweoz \ Selected Papers HAR@LD-F. SEAREES, M:De Collectively, the papers in this volume deal with, more than anything else, countertransference—that is, the atti- tudes and feelings, conscious or uncon- scious, on the analyst’s part toward the patient. Throughout these papers, Dr. Searles shows how crucial it is that the analyst have, or develop, the courage and honesty to become as aware as pos- sible of whatever thoughts, fantasies, and emotions the work with a particular patient arouses in him. The analyst, as- serts Dr. Searles, must have the humility to be ever-ready to discover that these feeling-experiences of his “own,” even the most seemingly private of them, are to a significant degree a function of the patient’s life history, being evoked in the analyst through the medium of the pa- tient’s transference reactions and _atti- tudes. Many pioneering theoretical concepts are introduced in this predominantly clinical work. Dr. Searles dwells much upon therapeutic symbiosis; the patient's therapeutic strivings on behalf of the analyst; and various psychodynamic pro- cesses characteristic of borderline, schiz- oid, narcissistic, and severely neurotic patients. Countertransference and Related Sub- jects is a pioneering and fundamental contribution to psychoanalytic and gen- eral psychiatric theory. It is intended to assist those practitioners of psychoanal- ysis and psychoanalytic therapy who are working, whether in private practice or in institutions, with the more resistive patients of whatever diagnosis.
