Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an umbrella term for many different psychosocial therapies that share some common elements that are based on the process of Cognitive Reappraisal. Two of the “earliest forms” of CBT were Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), developed by Albert Ellis in the 1950s, and Cognitive Therapy (CT), developed by Aaron T. Beck in the 1960s. What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy — CBT? 1. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a form of psychotherapy that emphasizes the important role of thinking in how we feel and what we do. 2. CBT is time limited — devoted to reducing and eliminating psychological symptoms and distress as quickly and completely as possible. 3. CBT requires psychoeducation. For example, clients must learn the relationship between problems (activating events), beliefs, thoughts, emotions and actions. 4. CBT is strategic, problem-oriented, and solution-focused. 5. CBT is structured and active (agenda, homework). 6. CBT considers symptoms to be the problem and, symptom relief to be the goal. Symptoms are caused by irrational beliefs, cognitive distortions and maladaptive behaviors. 7. CBT requires a collaborative therapeutic relationship. 8.
