We have been repeatedly requested by diverssources topublisha Guide toConstantinople, and have as repeatedly pointed out that publi cations ofthe kind requested were not lacking. “It is not that,” we weretold. What then did the public require? A practical Guide, by means of which the visitor to Constantinople can see everything by himself; a book containing all that is necessary and not more than is necessary. Itis impossible to say how difficult is the compilation ofsuch a work. Atour request, Mr. ErnestMamboury was good enough to und ertake thetask. It has been well done: while happily surmounting the innumerable difficultiesofevery nature that the editing ofa Guide along the lines andwithin the limits of this small volume presented, he has produced the compelling diptych “Byzance and Stamboul,” condensing into asmall compass what five centuries retained of Byzantium and have created inStamboul, maintaining a just balance between the two Wepersonally lay claim tonoother merit but that ofhaving initi ated and undertaken the work here presented, and of having done our best to attain that standard which at the outset we fixed for ourselves. The highly valued expressions of appreciation which the reader will find immediately following thisforeword suffiiciently indicate that we have attained our end. But we hope that the Public will receive this publication as favourably as our efforts in other directions have been received. This edition is also published in Turkish, French, and German. As soon as this, the first edition, is sold, further editions will be published, containing such additions and amendments as expressed opinion suggests to us. We express our thanks to those numerous friends who have assisted us by theiradvice and encouragement. We also have to thank Mr. E.F.Rochat and especially Messrs. Sebah & Joaillier who gra ciously furnished the photographs which ornament this book. R.IZZO & S()N. Constantinople, December 1925358 PREFACE by H. E. Dr EMINE BEY PREFECT OF CONSTANTINOPLE PRESIDENT OF THE TURKISH TouriNG CLUB. I have perused with as much interest as profit the Guide to Cons tantinople written by Mr. Ernest Mamboury, Member of the Active Committee ofour Touring Club, and published by Mr. Alfred Rizzo. It is with profound satisfaction that I state that this work, in spite of the modesty ofits form, goes beyond the limits of a simple Tourist Guide and constitutes at the same time a valuable manual ofByzantine and Turkish History in its connection with Stamboul. Zia bey, General Secretary of the Commission for the Conserva tion of Historical Monuments, and Wahid Bey, Professor at the School of Arts, whohave read the proofs, confirm my opinion. This book fills a regrettable need. Guides published abroad have contained many anachronisms or inaccuracies and give a false or incomplete idea of the beauties and the monuments ofour town, as well as ofTurkish manners and customs. I thank the author for having given us a work which, by its objectivity and its scientific spirit, redeemed from all idea ofpolitical propaganda, remedies all the faults that could be found with publications of the same kind previous to this date. I congratulate the publisher equally on the happy initiative which inspired thisnecessary and usful work. Messrs. Mamboury and Rizzo assure us that they will, in future editions, introduce numerous amendmentºs which I hoperwill be as many and perfect as possible, as much in the interests fthe town as inthat ofTourists to whom this Guide will become indispensable. …e. - Prefect of Constantinople President of theTurkish Touring Club.
