Granada, through its history has been open to different cultures, people and beliefs. In this regard, we are trying to offer you a great, modern and attractive Congress, joining different cultures, traditions and knowledge throughout the new aspects of Nutrition research, development and innovation all around the world. Indeed, the selected theme “Joining Cultures Through Nutrition” conveys nutrition and healthy lifestyles for everyone in a sustainable environment. The Congress Program Committee, with the support of the IUNS Council, the International Scientific Committee and the Local Scientific Committee members, has been working hard to develop an outstanding program of scientific excellence divided into eight main tracks covering a broad range of topics, namely: Advances in nutrition research, Nutrition through life course, Public health nutrition and environment, Nutrition and management of diseases, Nutrients and nutritional assessment, Functional foods and bioactive compounds, Food culture practices and nutritional education, and Agriculture, food science and safety. During the course of the six-day IUNS 20th ICN, more than 4,000 participants from over 120 countries will be actively engaging in the congress, and over 700 internationally renowned nutritional scientists, researchers and clinicians will share the latest in the field of nutrition through 6 plenary lectures, 32 special lectures, 4 debates, 90 parallel symposia, 38 sponsored symposia and 16 satellite symposia. For the first time, in parallel to the IUNS 20th ICN, the Iberoamerican Nutrition Foundation (FINUT), a non-profit- making organization set up in February 2011 which trustees are the SEÑ and IUNS, have promoted and organized an exhibition about “Healthy food, nutrition and lifestyles within a sustainable environment” in collaboration with Parque de las Ciencias (Granada) entitled “Nutrition, Source of Life”. This project is aimed above all at the general public, who, by means of a simple, attractive and enjoyable exhibition presentation, can discover the fundamental concepts in relation to food and nutrition that anyone can put into practice to improve their health and enjoy a better quality of life. The visit of this exhibition is offered free for all IUNS 20th ICN delegates at Parque de las Ciencias, Granada. Despite the European economic crisis affecting specially Spain, we are pleased to have received financial assistance from a number of international agencies, national and local institutions and the nutrition industry to organize this congress and to support the participation of nutrition scientists and professionals from developing countries and young scientists through travel grants. Indeed, the IUNS 20th ICN provided subsidized rates for students and delegates from low- and middle- income countries. Granada is a historic and world renowned city for its beauty and culture. Besides the famous Alhambra, it also has a significant number of arabic, gothic, renaissance and baroque monuments, as well as countless palaces, traditional houses, unexpected corners and courtyards, together with attractive squares. We hope all ICN delegates can enjoy Granada and the traditional Andalusian hospitality as well as the social activities we have prepared where you can meet with colleagues and friends from all regions of the world. Our wish is that you have a fruitful and successful IUNS 20th ICN, enjoy your stay and leave Granada with unforgettable fond memories. With the collaboration and support of all attendants and with the spirit of partnership and working together we hope that achieving the goal of “Joining Cultures Through Nutrition” is a fact. Prof. Angel Gil Congress President Chairman IUNS 20th ICN Organizing Committee President of the Spanish Society of Nutrition 2 Welcome message from the IUNS President www.icn2013.com Dear Participants of the IUNS 20th ICN, Since its founding over six decades ago, IUNS remained true to the guiding principle of its mission ”to promote the advancement of the science of nutrition, research, and development through international cooperation globally“. The International Congress of Nutrition (ICN) serves as its global forum of interactions in research and information exchange and topical subjects often formed the basis for substantial parts of the scientific programme. Traditionally, the ICN offers the unique global forum where almost all disciplines of nutrition, diet, and health are considered and results of basic and applied research projects are presented. Also traditional is the fact that ICN is used as recognised platform to discuss research outcomes and views of projects conducted at multinational, regional, and global level. From 15th to 20th September 2013, the IUNS 20th ICN of the IUNS will be held in Granada, Spain, under the title “Joining Cultures through Nutrition”. The ICN is organised every four years by a different adhering body and normally in a different region of the world. In order to increase the awareness of our organisation and facilitate more opportunities for young nutrition scientists to share their experience with the international scientific community, IUNS decided to shorten the intervals between the great scientific events to have an international scientific congress biennially. Transparent in all actions, IUNS works in partnerships but places public interests first. Scientists representing IUNS are involved in different activities of organisation and agencies of the UN System carried out at regional and global levels such as NCD prevention, food and nutrition surveillance systems, food quality and safety, monitoring and evaluation of nutrition intervention programmes, SUN movement etc. To facilitate cooperation with the private sector to sponsor the organisation of its scientific events, IUNS published guidelines, which are binding for fundraising efforts of the host of the ICN http://www.unscn.org/files/Publications/ SCN_News/SCNNEWS39_10.01_low_def.pdf. Connections to the private sector should be encouraged but chosen carefully always bearing in mind the independent science-based and credible profile of IUNS. IUNS has an established record in capacity development and in Nutrition Leadership with some success stories in countries of Asia, Africa, and the Middle East and in 2011 IUNS and the Spanish Society of Nutrition established the Foundation for the Development of Nutrition in Iberoamerica, (Fundacion Iberoamericana de Nutricion (FINUT). However, existing competing interests of other international organisations with overlapping goals remain to be discussed and minimized by the IUNS Council in the near future. IUNS is member of the International Council of Sciences (ICSU), participates in different current activities, such as the CODATA- Nanomaterials project. IUNS is also member of the ICSU Bio-Unions Cluster which aims to develop a concept of “Systems Biology” that addresses the diverse needs of the participating unions. The ICSU Bio-unions organized already two joint symposia, the one was on “Unraveling the Globesity Puzzle (2012)” and the second on “Multi-scale Systems Biology (2013)”. In the last quadrennium, institution-born issues like the new registration of IUNS, the “fighting” over the iuns.org web domain, establishing a functioning administrative office (secretariat) presented a great challenge, but in the end were satisfactorily managed by the honest and dedicated participation of all council members. I was privileged to lead IUNS in the term 2009-2013 and wish my successor(s) who will be in charge of other probably greater challenges much success. Professor I. Elmadfa Emer.
