SECTION 1 RODOLFO VIERA THROWS Rodolfo Vieira has some of the best throws in jiu jitsu right now… Rodolfo Vieira is a beast to say the least. He dominates many of his opponents with his aggressive and relentless style and can be seen wrecking people from the neutral standing position. He also has a killer guard passing game as well. He is a very exciting competitor to watch because of how skilled he is from the feet, and more likely than not will be throwing his opponent at some point during the match. Rodolfo Vieira vs Andre Galvao One particular match to take a look at would be his match against Andre Galvao from the 2012 Abu Dhabi World Pro Jiu Jitsu Championship. SPECIAL DEAL www.mic CLICK HERE (yes it works!) Andre Galvao is no beginner from the feet, and he also has an extensrive ojudo bjj.com background like Rodolfo does. The fact that Rodolfo is able to throw him so successfully is very impressive. Here’s the match: http://youtu.be/UxUpONj4h4c The way Rodolfo sets up the throw is great. He maintains his grips on the sleeve and collar, gives Andre two strong downward shakes, then executes a beautiful drop seoi nage. Rodolfo is almost able to pass all the way to mount, but Andre is quick in scrambling and luckily gets back to a deep half guard position. Rodolfo Vieira vs Xande Ribiero Another excellent match that showcases Rodolfo’s throws is his recent match against Xande Ribiero from the 2012 IBJJF World Championships. There is a specific sequence right around the 2:35 mark where they get into it, check it out: Xande attempts a throw of his own but is stifled by Rodolfo’s strong base. Rodolfo then reacts to Xande’s attack by countering with his own drop seoi nage. As Xande stands after the initial throw, Rodolfo then throws him again, this time to the other side. An excellent sequence of techniques to watch!  Rodolfo Vieira vs Roberto Alencar Again, a great match from Rodolfo Vieira is when he faced off against Roberto Alencar at the same tournament in Abu Dhabi where he fought Andre Galvao. The throw does not come so quickly in this match, but gives us a good look at how relentless Rodolfo is with his aggressive throws during his matches. Let’s take a look at this one: http://youtu.be/TEPQTYiSV6g This is a great match to watch if you are trying to improve your jiu jitsu game from the feet by incorporating judo into it. Both competitors are very aware that they want to throw each other, and we see a lot of foot sweep attempts as well. One thing to notice is how Rodolfo uses his hips to control the weight and balance of Alencar when they are grip fighting. You can see him repeatedly turn his hips outward in order to generate enough force to move Alencar off his base. Eventually, Rodolfo executes a beautiful throw and puts Alencar on his back, which happens at the 4:00 mark in the video when Alencar attempts a foot sweep and opens himself up to the throw. Like I said earlier, this match is a must watch if you are looking to improve your judo or you are trying to improve your grip fighting or throws. Rodolfo Vieira is definitely an exciting competitor to watch, so if you haven’t got enough of his monstrous throws, here’s a nice highlight video of him doing what he does best… GET TWO DVDs FOR ONLY $17.00 ! 2 for 1 ! We’ve recently featured some of the best leg locks in competition, and now that we have picked the leg lock game apart, It’s time to dive into the world of takedowns and throws. Nowadays, we see slightly more guard pulling than we see takedowns and throws in BJJ competition. There are several reasons for this, but either way, we wanted to feature some of the best takedowns and throws in competition that really stand above the rest to remind everyone that these techniques are important to know. This particular article is dedicated to the one and only Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, one of the most aggressive and dominant competitors to ever walk the mats. His aggressive style and judo background is what enables him to be so efficient with his takedowns and throws. Let’s take a look at one particular match of his. In this match from the 2005 ADCC Championship, Jacare faces off against David Bielkheden. The takedown happens very early into the match, so don’t blink! Complete Dominance! What makes this takedown so impressive is the setup. Like almost all takedowns and throws, you need a good setup if you want it to be successful. Jacare does this by working the single collar tie for a little bit. When he finds himself close enough, he tags David’s foot with his own right foot, drops his right knee to the mat, and hooks around David’s left leg with his left arm for a beautiful inside single leg variation. Notice how Jacare keeps his head on the inside of David’s hips the whole time, while cutting the angle to the right side. Excellent technique. Let’s look at another takedown/throw from Jacare: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=TEPQTYiSV6g This technique is a perfect example of how when executed at the right time, the foot sweep can get you a quick two points and have your opponent on his back before he can react accordingly. As Jacare engages with his opponent, who happens to be Amal Easton in this match, they initiate grips and Amal begins to move his right leg backwards and away from Jacare’s potential single leg takedown. When Amal steps the right leg back, Jacare catches the heel with his own right foot and forces Amal’s upper body backwards and to the mat. Not only does the foot sweep generate tremendous force because of the redirection of Amal’s weight, but Jacare also begins to try to pass right from the moment they both hit the ground. An exceptionally brilliant technique indeed. Jacare is definitely known for having a very dangerous game from the feet, and you can learn this by watching any of his matches at either brown or black belt (his matches against Roger Gracie are phenomenal). Learning some simple takedowns and throws is essential to your BJJ game, so make sure you do so! If you want to see more of his throws and takedowns, look no further. Here’s an awesome highlight reel of just that! http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=nfh5WHKa5ZI SECTION 3 WRESTLING IN BJJ If you want to improve your wrestling for BJJ, look no further than Justin Rader Justin Rader is a black belt who trains at Rafael Lovato Jr.’s academy in Oklahoma. If you have ever seen him compete, he brings an awesome wrestling game to the table and has an unbelievable wrestling base. With a list of grappling and wrestling accomplishments, it’s no wonder that Justin Rader is sucha beast in his matches. Check out this highlight reel to see what i’m talking about. Amazing takedowns and aggressive throws: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=lzOyxAB01Ko Definitely some very powerful takedowns and a killer wrestling base. There are a few particular takedowns of his that I find to be exceptionally useful to watch and to study from. The first of them is the inside trip he uses when he gains an over hook  in the standing front head lock position.  Lets take a look at a match where he does this effectively: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=c_mODmgwj9A This is a great match to watch if you want to learn a thing or two about counter wrestling. Rader’s opponent, Dave Jacobs, is another extremely skilled takedown artist, and this match proves to be a good one! At the beginning of the match, It’s easy to see that both guys are in it for the takedown, and they both most certainly want the first two points. Dave shoots in a couple of times, but Rader sprawls quickly each time and is able to secure the same head and arm control that hes does in the previous match you just watched. He does an excellent job of sprawling and driving all of his weight through his hips to secure the control. Rader also does a great job of dropping his shoulder into Dave’s back for extra control, which is also very uncomfortable to say the least.
