It attracts to its spacious small-town campus a national student body, together with a growing number ofinternational students. Denison is a coeducational community ofintellectual excellence and moral ideals. TheDenison oftodaybearslittlephysical resemblanceto theinstitutionin itsearliest years, yet there is an important continuity from those times to the present. From its beginning,theCollegehasbeencommittedtoservingsociety'sneedforeducation. Ithas endeavoredtobe,inthewordsofitsfirsttrustees,"ausefulInstitutionsuitedtothewants, andcalculatedtopromotethewelfareof, arapidlygrowingandfreecountry." Founded in December 1831 by the Ohio Baptist Education Society, the school was originallyknown as the Granville Literary andTheological Institution; it held its first classesinthelocalBaptistchurch.Ayearlateritwasabletomovetoitsintendedfarmsite amilewestofthevillage, and itsfirstthreestudentsweregraduatedin 1840. The name waslegallychangedtoGranvilleCollegefiveyearslater. By 1854thetrusteeshadagreed notonlyto move theschoolto thepresentsiteonahilloverlookingthevillage, butalso tonameitDenisonUniversityinhonorofWilliamS. Denison,aresidentofneighboring MuskingumCountywhohadpledged$10,000 to acrucialendowmentcampaign. By the term "university" the trustees then meant that Denison would offer several differentcoursesofstudy,includingworkinthesciencesleadingto"thedegreeofBachelor ofScience, alreadyadopted in someoftheeasterncolleges." Graduateprogramsleading to a master's degree were adopted in 1887, but by the late 1920s Denison became, by choice, solelyan undergraduateinstitution. Coeducationcameaboutgraduallyaswell.InDecember 1832GranvillesaddlerCharles Sawyer had founded the Granville Female Seminary on what is now Denison's Lower Campus. In 1861 thosebuildingsweresoldtotheYoungLadies'Institute,atwo-year-old Baptist-sponsoredenterprise,andby1866someInstitutewomenwerewelcomedinclasses "onthehill." RenamedShepardsonCollegeforWomenin 1886attheretirementofthe Institute'sbelovedpresident, theRev. DanielShepardson, thisold"UpperSem" became partofDenisonUniversityin 1900. In 1927thetwoweremergedunderoneboardof36 trustees. Our commitment to a broad liberal arts education is expressed in the form ofGeneral and Major Requirements designed to structure the student's pursuit ofthese educational goals. Breadth refers to a set ofexperiences that introduces students to a wide range ofcontent and modes ofinquiry, offers a broad exposure to human culture, andcultivates amore informed understandingofourworld frommanyperspectives. Depthreferstothedevelopmentofthehigher-orderintellectual competencies that come primarily from the intensive study ofa particular discipline, principallyfrom thepursuitofamajor. Independentthinkingdenotes thedevelopment ofthecapacity,embodiedinthe"liberal"or"free" person, tochallengeassumptionsand tocreatenewideasandmeanings. Graduation Requirements LJ Earn 127semesterhoursofcredit; n Earnacumulativegrade-pointaverageofatleast2.0, bothoverallandinthemajor andminorfields; L_I Takeapproximately 13coursesfromavarietyofareasofknowledgeasapartofthe General Educationprogr—am; LJ Majorinsomearea eitherinadepartment,aprogram,oranindividually-designed area; II Successfullycompleteacomprehensiveexperiencein certainmajorfields; ResideatDenisonforthetwosemestersofthesenioryear. To beacandidatefora I I Denisondegree,astudentmustcompleteatleastone-halfoftherequired 127credithours in residence at Denison. To satisfactorilycompleteamajorat Denison, atleastone-half ofthe credit hours that fulfill major requirements must be completed in residence at Denison. To satisfactorily complete a minor at Denison, at least one-halfofthe credit hours that fulfill minor requirements must be completed in residence at Denison. Generally,allstudents,exceptthoseenrolledinrecognizedpre-professional3-2programs, must complete the last two semesters in residence at Denison. Exceptions to these requirements may be made by the Registrar's Advisory Board. A course taken "in residence" isdefinedasanycoursescheduledbythe Denison registrarandtaughton the Denisoncampus,oranycoursescheduledbytheDenisonregistrarandtaughtoff-campus byafull-timeDenisonfacultymember.Thispolicyprescribesauniversity-wide minimum residencerequirement; individualdepartments mayhavestricterrequirements. GraduationRequirements Assessment ofAcademic Programs UndertheguidelinessetforthbytheNorth CentralAssociationofColleges, Denison isestablishingasetofprogramstoevaluatetheachievementofoureducationalgoals.These programsw^ill continuallyassess theoutcomes ofstudentlearningin terms ofthestated objectivesofthegeneraleducationprogramandthemajor. Degrees Available at Denison BachelorofArts A candidate for the Bachelor ofArts degree who majors in one department must successfullycompleteaminimumof24semester-hoursofwork.The maximumnumber q/'credithourswhichmaybetakeninthemajorbytheendofthejunioryearis32.Hours inthemajorinexcessof32attheendofthejunioryearwillnotcounttowardthedegree. Thesemaximumsdonotapplytoaninterdepartmentalorindividuallydesignedmajor. Maximums inthesecasesareto beworkedoutwiththestudent'sadviserandothers. BachelorofArts candidatesshallbefreeto plan theirseniorprogram, in consultation withtheiradviser, tosuitindividualneedsastodepthandbreadthofstudy. BachelorofScience Acandidate for the Bachelor ofScience degree maypursue courseworkin anyofthe followingfields: Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Geology, MathematicsorComputer Science, Physics (Astronomy), andPsychology. Acandidate for the BachelorofSciencedegree mayearn amaximum of70 semester- hoursinthemajorfieldandspecifiedrelatedarearequirements.Atleast24hoursmustbe earnedinthemajorfield. BachelorofFineArts AcandidatefortheBachelorofFineArtsdegreewillmajorinstudioartortheatreand is required to take a minimum of40 credit hours in that major. The program will be plannedwithadepartmentaladviser. Including two First-Year Seminars, candidates for the B.F.A. degree are required to complete successfully a minimum of 16 hours credit from General Education courses outsidethefinearts, includingoneGeneralEducationcourseeach inthesciences,social sciences, andhumanities. In addition, astudentwill takeaminimum of15 credithours from the followingareas, otherthan themajorareaofconcentration: arthistory, dance, music, theatre,cinema,andstudioart. BFAcandidatesinTheatreandStudioArtmaybe requiredbytheirdepartmentstofulfilladditionalgeneraleducation requirements. DoubleDegrees Althoughthepursuitofadoubledegreeisrare,Denisonstudentsmayearntwodegrees duringtheirundergraduatecareer. Forfurtherinformation, contacttheRegistrar. GraduationRequirements General Education Requirements Alifebasedonrationalandhumaneself-determination, towhichall liberaleducation aspires, requires those skills and understandings ofideas, principles, and methods most common to themajorrealmsofmodern knowledge. Inrecognitionofthis need, DenisonoffersaprogramofGeneral Education. Students must take certain courses from this program regardless ofmajor field. It is designed to exposethestudenttobroadareasofknowledgethatshouldcontributetothedualgoalsof vocationalsuccessandahappier, moreintelligentmodeofliving. In some cases courses from the General Education area must be taken in the first or secondyears.Furthermore,sinceweareeagertobuildontheacademicworkstudentshave donebeforecomingtoDenison,studentsmayeitherwaiveand/orreceivecreditinthese areasbyAdvancedPlacementorProficiencyTesting. n First-YearSeminarsRequirement: 2 courses Seepage91 forafulldescriptionoftheFirst-YearProgramSeminars . D TextualInquiry: Acoursethathasasitsprimaryfocusthecloseanalysisandinterpretationofoneormore texts. n CriticalInquiry: Acourseinwhichstudentswillcriticallyanalyzephilosophicalandreligiousquestions centraltotheheritageofWesternandnon-Westerncivilizations. SocialInquiry: Acoursethatintroducesthesocial-scientificstudyofpolitical,social,oreconomicissues inthemodernindustrialworld. n ScientificInquiry: Threecourses,includingoneinthelifesciences(BiologyorPsychology)andoneinthe physicalsciences (Astronomy, Chemistry, Geology,orPhysics.) Thethirdsciencecourse can be an additional one-semester course in a life or physical science; it can be an appropriateone-semestercollege-levelcourseintheMathematicalSciences;oritcanbea cross-disciplinarysciencecourse. D ArtisticInquiry: Two courses in Studio Art, Art History, Dance, Music, Theatre, or Cinema. This requirementcanbefulfilledwithstudioor"participatory"coursesforatleastsixhoursof cumulativecredit. Useofaccrued"participatory"creditstosatisfythisrequirementmust bedoneinconsultationwiththeappropriatedepartmentalchairpersonandtheRegistrar. GraduationRequirements D Minority/Women's Studies: Acourse that focuses on some aspects ofthe experience, identity, and contributions ofwomenandminoritygroupsin20thcenturyAmerica. n ForeignLanguage: Thereareavarietyofwaystodemonstratetherequiredskillinforeignlanguage. (1) You receive credit andwaiver for the language requirement ifyou score 700 or higheronaCollegeBoardAchievementExaminationinanyforeignlanguage. (2)Youreceivecreditand/orwaiverfor"adequate"performanceonaCollegeEntrance Examination BoardAdvanced PlacementTest. "Adequate" performance is determined bythedepartment. (3) Denison requires that every student complete the first three semesters or the equivalent in one foreign language. All entering students who have studied a foreign language must take the appropriate placement test during the orientation period. Ifa studentintendstocontinuealanguagebeguninhighschoolorforwhichtherewasother preparation,theplacementtestdetermineshowmany,ifany,semestersofthatlanguage arenecessary. D WesternStudies: A course that focuses upon one or more aspects ofthe origins and development of Western Civilization throughthenineteenthcentury. n Non-WesternStudies: Acoursethatinvestigatesthehistorical,aesthetic,religious,social,political,economic, orecologicalfoundationsandaccomplishmentsofahumansocietyoutsidetheWest. n OralCommunicationRequirement: Proficiencyisrequiredandmaybedemonstratedbypassingaspecialtestadministered tofirst-yearstudentsbytheCommunicationDepartmentortheDepartmentofTheatre andCinema.First-yearstudentsarestronglyurgedtotakethistest.Studentswhodonot demonstrateproficiencythroughthetestmaytakeoneofthefollowingcoursestofulfill therequirement:Communication 101,221,222or223;TheatreandCinema121, 123.
