YOU! C A N N O N S C H O O L ANNUAL REPORT 2015-2016 MATTHEW E. GOSSAGE HEAD OF SCHOOL PARTICIPATE. To participate, we have to make the decision to forego the opportunity to do something else, to clear mental and physical space, to move directly into the stream of an activity or organization, and to join others with the fullest intent of being involved. We participate in something. We participate in something with others. With participation there is engagement, and there is a sharing. Cannon School is a place that invites participation. The invitation comes boldly and personally because the school literally requires participation in its equation for excellence. One of the best ways to assess the health of our culture is to note the degree to which members of the community want to be involved. As Cannon students progress along the continuum here, they want to become more active participants in shaping the culture of an advisory, a classroom, a grade level, and a division. Cannon teachers have participated in building a renewed professional development program, an approach to teaching that is much more relational, and a curriculum that seeks to engage on a deeper level. And Cannon parents participate in a partnership with the school that has transformed the traditional paradigm for school and family. In 2015-2016, the Cannon community brought the level of participation in the annual support of our school to a new record. I am so excited to announce that 82% of our parents participated in giving to the Cannon Fund this past year. This level of participation makes a clear statement regarding involvement and engagement. On behalf of the Cannon faculty and staff, I want to thank you. Anne and Holt Morrison, along with Hans and Siobhan Peterson, were tireless in their respective roles as Co- Chairs of the Cannon Fund. They began their work in August 2015 and continued to lead us through June 2016. We are so grateful for their determined leadership. Two other people deserving recognition are Blake Evans, the chair of our Advancement Committee and Todd Hartung, our Director of Advancement. Blake and Todd have formed a most important partnership in working together to encourage parents, grandparents, friends, and alumni to participate in supporting Cannon. As we look back on this phenomenal year for our school, I hope each of you can reflect on your participation in helping our school in its mission to nurture growth in our students. I am grateful for your willingness to be a part of this. Sincerely, 2 3 Cannon families and friends have also given generously to provide us with new spaces that encourage Cannon students to show their Cougar pride, gather together, and innovate. In 2015, we hosted dedications for the Randy Marion Field and the Dining Hall Expansion, and we watched students benefit from enhancements to the Middle School, which was the final piece of the Building Bright Futures Campaign. This year, we are thrilled about our renovated Lower School Library—a dynamic space that is flexible enough to accommodate multiple groups of children at once and includes a production room, nooks for reading, a makerspace area, and a sun porch. We are grateful this important project was made possible thanks to budgeted funds, a grant award, and generous support from all four of our Parents at Cannon (PAC) groups. As always, our PAC Groups gave generously of themselves to assist our students, teachers, and coaches throughout the year and orchestrate a first-rate PAC Golf Tournament that is a highlight each spring. Likewise, twenty-seven Corporate Partners gave $82,600 to further encourage and elevate the people and programs TODD W. HARTUNG, JR. at Cannon that inspire the larger DIRECTOR OF ADVANCEMENT community beyond our campus. And finally, we are excited to recognize families and friends who have answered ANYONE WHO WORKS AT A SCHOOL or has school-age children knows that this season our call to support Cannon School’s of summer morphing into fall is a time for looking back on previous journeys with fondness and looking ahead to endowment, building a stronger new ones with anticipation. And while we were excited to JOURNEY THROUGH 2015-2016 AND FOR ALWAYS LOOKING welcome many new families as first-time donors to Cannon, we remain deeply grateful to families who have given AHEAD WITH US TO THE NEXT ADVENTURE. of themselves for many years running. It is families like these who motivated us to create the Consecutive Giving Society, recognizing families like the Bakers who you will get to read more about. Sincerely, 4 5 MANY MEMBERS OF OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY RECOGNIZE THE IMPORTANT ROLE THEY PLAY IN BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN TUITION AND THE ACTUAL COST OF A CANNON EDUCATION. AS A RESULT, THEY SUPPORT THE CANNON FUND EACH AND EVERY YEAR. THOSE WHO CHOOSE TO CONTRIBUTE OVER THE COURSE OF FIVE CONSECUTIVE YEARS AUTOMATICALLY BECOME MEMBERS OF THE CONSECUTIVE GIVING SOCIETY. BELOW, KRISTIN BAKER EXPLAINS WHY HER FAMILY HAS CHOSEN TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE CANNON FUND EVERY YEAR FOR THE LAST SIXTEEN YEARS. When Dr. Kristin Baker sent her daughter Leah off to her first day of kindergarten back in 1999, Cannon School was a vastly different place. There was no Upper School, no front entrance, and the population was about 500 students. But there was one constant that Dr. Baker said has not changed over the course of sixteen years and two more children at Cannon. “I knew right away that my children would be known for who they are,” she said. “I had a lot of trust in Cannon’s focus on children because they were not only known as students, but as people.” Dr. Baker and her husband, Dr. Scott Baker, are the parents of Leah ’13, Kelli ’15, and Michael ’17. Leah is a senior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Kelli is a sophomore at Georgetown University, and Michael is a senior at Cannon. Three different kids, three different experiences, but one recurrent theme—“The faculty and staff offer a community of both support and accountability,” said Dr. Baker. Dr. Baker recalled a time when Kelli was in the Upper School and considered taking on an especially rigorous course load. “We worked with the teachers and Deb Otey to put some contingencies into place in case it didn’t work out, and that allowed her to take risks she may not have,” she said. With Leah, Dr. Baker remembered when Upper School History Teacher Laura Huffman taught her a new and different way to approach her workload. “She asked her to trust her, and if it didn’t work—they would throw that grade away.” For Michael, Dr. Baker says that in Middle School he would come home and every night at dinner recount discussions his history class had engaged in about current events. “There was this great passion which was ignited by his teachers,” she said. Because her children were having such positive experiences at Cannon, it was a natural fit for the Bakers to contribute to the Cannon Fund. “We all win when we give,” said Dr. Baker. “We keep tuition lower, we impact what might happen for our kids and the future, it’s tax-deductible, and we allow the school to sustain and grow.” “We are confident in the school’s management of its fiduciary responsibilities. Cannon has continually demonstrated optimal and thoughtful use of donors’ funds.” THE BAKER FAMILY As Dr. Baker said, “Cannon feels like home for my children.” We thank the Bakers for supporting this home, each and every year. 6 7 743 TOTAL DONORS THE CANNON FUND ACHIEVED RECORD LEVELS OF GIVING IN 2015-2016 THANKS TO THE GENEROSITY OF THE ENTIRE CANNON COMMUNITY. 535 10 158 23 The Cannon Fund goal of $525,000 was surpassed with a total of $602,964, due to overwhelming support from parents, faculty and staff, trustees, alumni and alumni parents, and friends of the school.
