Before taking your first steps into the world of decorative writing, learn more about the art of calligraphy and how to use this journal W hen it comes to handwriting, everyone’s style is unique. You might use little circles to dot your ‘i’s, or not curl the bottom of your ‘t’s. Perhaps your handwriting looks more like a chicken scratch and it’s hard to decipher your words. However you usually write, however neatly or whatever flourishes you use, that’s not calligraphy. So what is it? Strictly speaking, calligraphy is all about writing with pressure-sensitive tools. But, more than that, calligraphy is an art form in and of itself. It’s a creative outlet for many, and one that is as visually stunning as it is practical (that said, the practicality probably depends on your tools and style!) Much like the fonts found in word processing software, there are a plethora of different styles to choose from. Some look more informal and bouncy, and they’re perfect to add a personal touch to cheerful greetings cards. Others look more sinister – you might recognise the Gothic or Blackletter alphabets from documents and inscriptions dating back to the 1300s. Calligraphy as an art form has been around for centuries. mages Icta nd obees fno’tu nodn layl lh oavveer at hheo wmoer lidn, uEsuinrogp cea, reeiftuhle brr; ucsahllsitgrroakpehse orsr magesGetty I I 10
