JACOBUS CHRISTIAAN FAURE (1819-1879) Jacobus, on 31.07.1839, at age 20, married Johanna Henrietta KNOBEL [* 22.03.1818, Cape Town; ~ 02.04.1818, Uitenhage, Eastern Cape (close to Port Elizabeth); + 16.05.1880, Stellenbosch, aged 62; [] 18.05.1880, DRC New Cemetery, Stellenbosch] [daughter of Johann Balthasar Christian KNOBEL (* 15.02.1781; + 20.02.1853) and Maria Theresia Wilhelmina Eleonora VON BUCHENRÖDER (* 24.11.1786; + 03.03.1827)] in Cape Town. [A MOOC/nrn has the parents’ names as August Frederiech and Johanna HEYNS.] According to source FS/DRCR, JHK became a member of the Cape Town DRC on 05.07.1836, then again on 06.01.1840 (there must be an error), and a member of the Stellenbosch DRC on 11.01.1840. JCF became a member of the Cape Town DRC on 31.07.1839 (marriage date). Jacobus and Johanna had 11 children. No much is known about JCF’s life. The FHD reveals that he lived in one of the Faure houses in van Ryneveld Street, that in 1841 he became the became the owner of the “Poswa” (postal wagon) to Cape Town which was operated from his property, and that “Jacobus bekom die hoofopstal vanaf 1862 tot 1873” (Jacobus owned the main building / property between 1862 and 1873). 6 The first child was born in Cape Town (1840 at Leeuwenrust, when he was 20 and Johanna 22), and the second in 1842 in Stellenbosch. Thus, they lived with JCF’s father, Dr Abraham, early in their marriage and then settled in Stellenbosch in late 1840 or early 1841 (when he bought the “Poswa”). It will be recalled that father Dr Abraham became the owner of some of the Faure properties / house in 1838 (Abraham’s father JCF had died in 1834 and his wife had sold off parts of the Faure properties). Thus, it is evident that JCF lived in a house in van Ryneveld Street, and that he was a businessman. He must have done well because he was able to buy the main property, which included the Faure house, by 1862. (DrA, DrAT, FS/DRCR, NP/Faure, HeLo, HMM, Memorial Inscription, MOOC/nrn, Website1.) Henry lived at 8 Portland Place, Bath, Somerset, in 1871, and at 6 Elgin Road, Paddington, Middlesex, in 1881. He adopted his mother’s surname c1820 when his father passed on. Henry was a Military Officer, and first enlisted as a Cadet on 06.05.1824. He was qualified as an Interpreter in Hindustani and Mahratta. He was posted to be Interpreter in Mahratta to the Henry ASTON. Denoted as “Johanna” in 10th Regiment Native Infantry on 15.05.1827, and subsequently as Interpreter and Quarter- Source: MJH. source HBH (not sure). Master to other regiments. Henry ended his service in India as Assistant Political Agent at Rajcote-Katiawar. (DrA, SirPHT; NP/Faure; DVP; HeLo; FS; Army papers held at British Library, India Office Collections; England Census,1871 and 1881.) Catharina and Henry had 11 children. From the dates of their children, it is evident that they moved to Cape Town sometime in the period 1851-1853. If the date was 1852, Henry was aged 48 and CJMF was aged 31 at that time. It is not known how long they lived in Cape Town (or what he did for a living), but it was until after 1861. CJMF passed away in England of broncho pneumonia (Death Certificate).
