It celebrates sole traders who are making the most of ‘lonely BIM’ to improve their productivity and branching out into working with others. It features young and growing practices who have begun working with other disciplines in truly collaborative BIM. Lastly it explores the work of the specialists who have developed specific processes to complement their workflows such as Architype and Eurobuild with their semi-automated Passivhaus BIM systems. The case studies are supplemented by a series of contextual chapters written by industry leaders and discussing key issues of interest to small practices. Ray Crotty answers the question ‘Why BIM?’, exploring how our world will change when technology, standardisation and processes used in other industries cross over into design and construction. David Miller discusses the costs, practicalities and benefits of moving your practice to take advantage of BIM workflows and technologies. Stefan Mordue and Rebecca De Cicco give us a rundown of the vast and diverse resources available to those practices just starting to use BIM, including free guidance, groups, training and events. Finally I discuss how BIM can open up other lines for work through diversification to give your business a stable baseline cash flow. The change to model-based data-rich working to produce design, construction and maintenance information about buildings is probably the biggest shake-up of the way we work that I will experience in at least the first half of my career. The influence of the changes that are being demanded by the government and by private companies who are seeking reductions in construction costs and better data on and control of their buildings is far-reaching and it is clear that these changes will have a lasting effect on both big and small practices. With the UK establishing best practice for collaborative BIM working in the 1192 suite of documents and in future building control sign-off from models, it is only a matter of time before the BIM revolution affects us in one way or another. Looking more widely, the government construction strategy seeks to consolidate the UK’s position of excellence as a design, construction and maintenance services exporter. Through this BIM presents a huge opportunity for versatile small practices who want to grow into this new digital world. With government’s commitment to give 25% of all public work to SMEs and ongoing funded research programmes by the Technology Strategy Board specifically focused on digital construction there has never been a better time to start using BIM. This book highlights some of the best work that small practices are doing in BIM for both themselves and their clients through a series of detailed case studies. It seeks to dispel the myth that BIM is not for SMEs and presents a wide range of examples of how technology and processes can be tailored to work well in a small office to serve high-quality design and drive business success. Most of all the case studies show that small practices can benefit from BIM. The hurdles for entry are less difficult than you think and, more importantly, BIM presents a platform for the future development of your practice as a provider of both exceptional design and valuable information. Myth 1 – BIM is for large projects. No! Examples in this book include residential conversions, extensions and a self-build house. Myth 2 – BIM is only for new buildings. No! There are lots of examples here of work involving existing buildings at all stages. Let’s remember that the majority of practices in the UK are micro to small and medium-sized enterprises. These businesses are the engine room of the design economy and the lifeblood of most projects. These case studies from hands-on practices illustrate and explain the use of BIM right at the grass roots, providing practical examples and plain speaking advice for any practitioner at whatever point on your BIM journey. Importantly for the architectural profession some common themes emerge here: (cid:131) improved collaboration for the team (cid:131) better design and project coordination (cid:131) increased efficiency and profitability (cid:131) more value added services; more accurate information earlier in the process (cid:131) better coordination with contractors and subcontractors (cid:131) faster and more accurate optioneering of alternative solutions at any stage. Architect SMEs are the speedboats of the industry, weaving between their oil tanker rivals and counterparts – they are quick to adapt, innovate and evolve with market conditions. BIM provides an opportunity to regain ground in design, procurement and construction processes by managing, coordinating and delivering perfect data across the asset life cycle and cementing their place as the real master builders in the industry. This value proposition is especially relevant to the smaller players in the built environment who are more agile. Whilst for some there may be a need to make an initial investment, the realisation of quicker workflows, automation of key processes and better coordination of information will soon unlock a positive return on their outlay. We are also witnessing some early SME adopters of BIM punching well above their weight and levelling the playing field against their bigger competitors, offering added value, less risk and better outcomes. As you will see through the case studies in this book, BIM, and in particular virtual prototyping, is helping practices and their customers to better understand design solutions as well as ultimately improving the quality of builds. From better spatial coordination, rapid optioneering to self-generation of data sheets the list of opportunities for the small practice is a large one. Organisations must also consider the risk of doing nothing in a sector that is rapidly shifting to digital transactions and queries. Hopefully this book will inspire you to make changes in your organisation – to either start doing BIM or perhaps accelerate your implementation.
