SECOND EDITION CAROL-LYNNE MOORE AND KAORU YAMAMOTO MOVEMENT OBSERVATION AND ANALYSIS 1111 Beyond Words 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 1011 1 2 Beyond Words presents a range of illuminating approaches to examining 3111 every day social interactions, to help the reader understand human 4 movement in new ways. 5 Carol-Lynne Moore and Kaoru Yamamoto build on the principles that 6 they expertly explored in the first edition of the book, maintaining a focus 7 on the processes of movement as opposed to discussions of static body 8 language. The authors combine textual discussion with a new set of website- 9 hosted video instructions to ensure that readers develop an in-depth 20111 understanding of nonverbal communication, as well as the work of its most 1 influential analyst, Rudolf Laban. 2 This fully revised, extensively illustrated second edition includes a new 3 introduction by the authors. It presents a fascinating insight into this vital 4 field of study, and will be an invaluable resource for scholars and practi- 5 tioners in many activities, from performing and martial arts, athletics, to 6 therapeutic and spiritual practices, conflict resolution, business interactions, 7 and intercultural relations. 8 Visual material for Chapters 3, 5, 8 and 9 can be found on the companion 9 website: www.routledge.com/cw/moore. 30111 1 Carol-Lynne Moore has lectured extensively in the U.S. and Europe on 2 Laban theory, including Movement Pattern Analysis, an assessment of 3 executive decision-making style developed from industrial and managerial 4 movement studies. Her most recent publication is The Harmonic Structure 35 of Movement, Music and Dance According to Rudolf Laban(Mellen Press, 6 2009). She is a founding member and current President of Motus Humanus, 7 a professional organization for movement specialists in the U.S. She 8 currently teaches at Columbia College, Chicago. 9 40111 Kaoru Yamamoto is Professor Emeritus at the University of Colorado and 1 a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, having taught exten- 2 sively in the U.S., Canada, Iceland, and China. He has edited scholarly 3 journals on psychology and education, and published widely in both areas, 4 including ten full-length works on human development, creativity, and 45111 cultural evolution. 1111 Beyond Words 2 3 Movement Observation 4 5 and Analysis 6 7 8 9 1011 Second edition 1 2 3111 4 5 6 7 Carol-Lynne Moore 8 9 Kaoru Yamamoto 20111 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 30111 1 2 3 4 35 6 7 8 9 40111 1 2 3 4 45111 Second edition published 2012 by Routledge 2 Park Square, Milton Park, Abingdon, Oxon OX14 4RN Simultaneously published in the USA and Canada by Routledge 711 Third Avenue, New York, NY 10017 Routledge is an imprint of the Taylor & Francis Group, an informa business © 2012 Carol-Lynne Moore and Kaoru Yamamoto The right of Carol-Lynne Moore and Kaoru Yamamoto to be identified as authors of this work has been asserted by them in accordance with sections 77 and 78 of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988. Its appearance 7 coincided with a wave of popular curiosity and scholarly inquiry into 8 nonverbal communication. While the realm of the “nonverbal” incorporates 9 static elements of behavior, such as chronic postural alignments, stationary 20111 poses, even clothing choices, Beyond Words concentrated on dynamic 1 dimensions; that is, bodily movements. This was, and remains, a bold choice 2 because “it is indeed difficult to write about how movement can be observed 3 and analyzed. Like a wave that furls and curls and rolls and crashes, then 4 suddenly is no more, how does one pin human movement down?” (ibid). 5 The original Beyond Words was the first movement observation text to 6 take advantage of two twentieth-century innovations—one mechanical and 7 one conceptual. In the first instance, the advent of videotape technology has 8 made it possible to record a variety of movement-events for study and review. 9 In the second instance, the work of polymath Rudolf Laban (1879–1958) 30111 has provided a conceptual framework for movement analysis. As a theorist, 1 Laban was one of the first individuals to conceive human movement as a 2 psychophysical phenomenon of enormous social and cultural significance. 3 His notation system and taxonomy of human movement provide additional 4 tools for recording, describing, and analyzing nonverbal behavior. Drawing 35 on both innovations, the authors combined written material with “video 6 chapters,” linking theoretical discussion of human movement with practical 7 observation and analysis exercises in the first edition. 8 Readers familiar with the original version of Beyond Wordswill find much 9 unchanged in this revision. Chapter structures and the sequence of presenta- 40111 tion of material follow the pattern of the first edition. Movement analysis 1 is still discussed in the context of human perception, endeavors of many 2 sorts, and the ever-present need to understand the movement behavior of 3 other people in real-life settings. However, certain discussions have been 4 streamlined. Many sections of the book have been updated to incorporate 45111 current findings, notably in neuroscience, that impact understanding of
