Beginner's Luck Calvin Campbell As the name hints, this is a contra dance for beginner’s. I don’t use improper duples at beginner dance parties, but this contra dance works great for Community Dances when you are ready to introduce the idea of duples. In order to have the dancers rotate quickly from active to inactive positions I keep the length of the contra lines to 5 or 6 couples. For practice, I’ve even stopped the music and had the lines Pass Thru and U-Turn Back so the roles are reversed. Then I start the music again. There is always a little confusion at this point, but it certainly makes it apparent that active and inactive are positions in the set..
