The papers are the results of research carried out as part of the project “At the meeting point of cultures and nations. Galician towns and small towns in the Josephinian Cadastral Survey”, funded by the National Science Centre (the Harmonia 8 programme). The project had two main objectives: developing a unique, online database of towns and their inhabitants and defining the components of the physical and social space of Galician towns in the late eighteenth century. These objectives were achieved using mass, complementary historical sources from the 1780s: the Josephinian Cadastral Survey and the so-called urbaria of 1789. During the first stage of the project, the studies covered 116 towns in the five easternmost districts of Gali cia: Zloczow, Tarnopol, Brzezany, Zaleszczyki and Stanislawow.1 1 1 They included the following towns: from Brzezany district - Bolszowce, B6br- ka, Brzezany, Brzozdowce, Bursztyn, Chodorow, Dunajdw, Firlejdw, Kqkolniki, Kni- hynicze, Kozlow, Kozowa, Mikolajdw, Narajdw, Podgrodzie, Podhajce, Podkamieri, Przemyslany, Rohatyn, Rozdol, Stratyn, Strzeliska Nowe, Swirz, Wybranowka and Za- walow; from Stanislawow district - Barysz, Bohorodczany, Chocimierz, Delatyn, Ja- blonow, Jezupol, Kamionka Wielka, Kolomyja, Kosdw, Kuty, Lysiec, Manasterzyska, Mariampol, Nadworna, Nizniow, Obertyn, Otynia, Peczenizyn, Pistyri, Solotwina, Stanislawow, Tlumacz, Tysmienica and UScie Zielone; from Tarnopol district - Bu- dzandw, Chorostkow, Grzymalow, Husiatyn, Janow, Kopyczyrice, Mikulirice, Skalat, Strusow, Suchostaw, Tarnopol, Tarnoruda, Touste, Trembowla and Zbaraz; from Za leszczyki district - Borszczow, Buczacz, Czernelica, Czortkow, Dzwinogrod, Grddek, Gwozdziec, Horodenka, Jagielnica Nowa, Jazlowiec, Jezierzany, Korolowka, Krzyw- cze, Kudryrice, Kulaczkowce, Mielnica, Probuzna, Skala, Sniatyn, TIuste, Ulaszkowce, Uscie Biskupie, Ltecieczko, Zablotow, Zaleszczyki and Zloty Potok and from Zloczow district - Bialy Kamieri, Brody. Busk, Cholojow, Dobrotwdr, Gliniany, Gologdry, Je- 6srqponmlkjihgfedcbaZYXWVUTSRQPONMLKJIHGFEDCBA Introduction The output of the study is an online database on the towns, published in the form of many volumes under one umbrella title RAtQ tPheO MNeMetLinKgJIHGFEDCBA Point of Cultures and Nations. Galician Towns and Small Towns in the Jo- sephinian Cadastral Survey (available on the websites www.miasta-gali- cji.pl and www.infona.pl). The database consists of two parts. The first comprises copies of the original documents characterising the physical and social space of the towns, including the descriptions of town limits, the location of plots of land, the area and type of land and the descrip tion of the social and occupational structure of the inhabitants; the sec ond part consists of a detailed description of the social space, including lists of inhabitants’ names along with the type and size of the property they owned, their income, social and legal status and ethnicity. The database is complemented by a series of monographic studies presented in this volume devoted to selected problems characteris tic of how Galician towns functioned in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The volume opens with an article written by Krzysztof Slusarek (Jagiellonian University in Krakow), devoted to the functional typology of the towns located in the analysed region of Galicia. Grzegorz Zamoyski (University of Technology in Rzeszow) presents the problem of the phys ical space of the towns, while Volodymyr Dolinovskyi (Central State His torical Archive in Lviv) characterises their economic infrastructure. Four texts are devoted to more broadly defined social issues. Rostyslav Melnyk (National University of Technology in Lviv) presents his reflections on the legal and political situation of the towns’ inhab itants. Tomasz Kargol (Jagiellonian University in Krakow) discusses the functioning of Roman Catholic religious institutions in the urban space, while Ivanna Stadnyk (Central State Historical Archive in Lviv) tackles the same problem with regard to the Greek Catholic Church. Lukasz Jewula (an independent historian associated with the Jagiello nian University in Krakow) discusses the place of Jews in the towns’ socio-economic space. The volume closes with two articles devoted to political issues. zierna, Kamionka Strumilowa, Kutkorz, Lesznidw, Markopol, Olesko, Podkamien, Pomorzany, Radzicchow, Sasow, Sokolowka, Stanislawczyk, Szczurowice, Topor6w, Witkow Now}’, Zalozce Nowe, Zarudzie, Zbor6w and Zloczdw. Introduction 7 Bohdana Petryshak (Central State Historical Archive in Lviv) characterises the changes in the structure and functioning of municipal authorities in Galicia which took place in the late eighteenth century. Michal Baczkowski (Jagiellonian University in Krakow) discusses the significance of the Austrian army in the development of Galician towns at the turn of the nineteenth century. Finally, a remark should be made on the terminology used in this volume. Firstly, when referring to the administrative allo cation of the towns, the administrative division from the 1780s was used. At that time, Galicia was divided into 18 administrative districts called circles (German: KRQrePisOe)N. TMhLeK dJiIsHtrGicFtsE (DciCrcBleAs) were divided into smaller units called dominia (German: Dominium). Secondly, some of the texts use old units of measurement of land and money. The area of land was given in yokes (German: Joch) and klafters (German: Klafter) (1 yoke = 1,600 Klafter = 0.5755 ha), while sums of money were given in Austria guldens (forints) and kreuzers (1 gulden = 60 Kreuzer). To make things easier, a sim plified method of recording was used, e.g. 2 yokes 1,534 klafters were recorded as 2.1534 Joch, while 15 gulden 45 kreuzer were given as 15.45 gulden. Due to the fact that systems of recording archival materials vary, a uniform system of abbreviating names of archives and fonds was used: ANK - National Archive in Krakow MAG I - Municipal Office of the City of Krakow I CDIAL - Central State Historical Archive of Ukraine in Lviv f. 19 - fonds 19: The Josephinian Cadastre f. 146 - fonds 146: The Galician Gubernium f. 159 - fonds 159: The Galician Procurator Fiscal in Lviv f. 181 - fonds 181: The Lanckoronski Family f. 409 - fonds 409: The Central Administration of the Estates of the Greek Catholic Metropolitanate in Lviv OStA/KA - Osterreichisches Staatsarchiv/Kriegsarchiv Wien AFA - Alte Feldakten KPS - Karten- und Plansammlung KLA - Kriegsminister Lacy Akten KM Pr. - Kriegsminiterium, Prasidialburo 8srqponmlkjihgfedcbaZYXWVUTSRQPONMLKJIHGFEDCBA Introduction KMA - Kriegsministerialakten MLST - Musterlisten und Standestabellen OStA/FHKA - Osterreichisches Staatsarchiv/Finanz-und Hofkam- merarchiv Wien KPS - Sondebestiinde, Sammlungen und Selekte. The elements of the file refer ence number refer to: f - fonds number o - number of collection of documents in the fonds s - number of archival unit p - page number.
