In the course of producing this list of the archives of the CWAAS, its affiliated groups, and its members, I have been much indebted to the staff of the Cumbria Archive Service, Carlisle Library’s Local Studies department, and Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery for facilitating my access to the archives and agreeing to the transfer to Carlisle Archive Centre (which holds the core archives of the CWAAS) of certain archives of the Society and its members which have hitherto been in their custody. Archivists and librarians from elsewhere in the country have been good enough to provide me with details of their own holdings of archives of members of CWAAS. I hope that those accessing this list will draw my attention to corrections which should be made to the list and to archives which I have omitted to include, in particular the deposited papers of members of the Society which may be found in a wide range of national and local record repositories. It is intended that this present list will be periodically updated to cover accessions to existing deposits as also archives drawn to my attention. It should be noted that The National Archives’ Discovery website (discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk) holds more than 32 million descriptions of records held by The National Archives and more than 2,500 archives across the country, though, of course, it should be observed that these descriptions only cover those archives that have been both listed and the lists made available online. Reference should also be made to Michael Winstanley and Rob David, A Guide to Cumbrian Historical Sources (Centre for North-West Regional Studies, Lancaster University, 2006), which describes in general terms the major library, museum and archive holdings, with entries for individual record offices, libraries, museums and art galleries, and specialist archives and collections, and also draws attention to deposits of Cumbrian material to be found elsewhere in the country, and to online sources. Providing the major online resource for the history of Cumbria is the website of the Cumbria County History Trust (cumbriacountyhistory.org.uk); the Trust was launched in May 2010 to coordinate and gather resources for the Victoria County History of Cumbria project, a collaborative community project created to research and write the histories of all parts of Cumbria and to make historical information generally available, within the framework and standards of the Victoria County History of England. In 2016, the CWAAS celebrates the 150th anniversary of its foundation. During the anniversary weekend of 9 and 10 September, Revealing Cumbria’s Past: 150 years of the Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society, edited by Michael Winstanley, Ian Whyte and Rob David, will be launched. A complimentary copy of this volume will be given to all who are members of CWAAS during the anniversary year. 5 Author : Adrian Allan, Issue 3 October 2016 Archives of the Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society I am much indebted to Sally Gall for her devoted labours in formatting this list.
