Cork City and County Archives Descriptive List Identity Statement Reference Code: IE CCCA/ARC1 Title: Chillingworth and Levie Architects Dates: (1899) 1911 - 1972 Level of description: Fonds / Item Extent and Medium: 3803 architectural drawings Context Creator(s): Chillingworth and Levie Architects (fl.1911-1980s) Archival History The firm's surviving collection of drawings was acquired by private purchase, with the assitance of Crawford Art Gallery, Cork in 1988. Administrative & Biographical History Architectural partnership formed between Robert Chillingworth and Daniel Andrew Levie in about 1911. Based at 11 South Mall, Cork. After the early death of Chillingworth, Levie carried on the business alone until 1929, when John E. Wilkinson was taken on as his partner. The practice continued under the same name after Levie's death in 1963 until the 1980s. (www.dia.ie) Content & Structure Scope & Content Presentation and working drawings for various building projects undertaken by the firm, mainly in the city and county of Cork area, but also including a small number of projects in other locations in Ireland such as Dublin (principally larger private residences). In the collection, over 700 drawings date from the period 1911-1929, over 600 from the 1930s, over 300 from the 1940s, over 650 from the 1950s, over 1350 for the 1960s, with 127 from the 1970s. © Cork City and County Archives 2010 1 Clients were mainly private firms and individuals. Firms for whom drawings were prepared include Beamish and Crawford brewery, Roches Stores, Queen's Old Castle department store, the Victoria Hotel, Ballylickey House Hotel Bantry, Lake Hotel Killarney, Commodore Hotel Cobh, Hosfords Bakery, Hibernian Bank, Woodford Bournes, the Oval public house Tuckey Street, Blackwater Cottons, Dwyer & Co., Passage Docks, Benner’s Hotel Tralee, Trux Ltd, the Lee Boot Manufacturing Co. Ltd., and Seafield Fabrics, Youghal. Drawings for premises in Patrick Street and other areas of Cork City centre are also included, including a small number relating to the reconstruction of 33-34 Patrick Street plus 1-3 Cook Street in c.1925, premises possibly destroyed in the Burning of Cork in December 1920 (see ARC1/3386 etc.) The collection includes several drawings relating to cinemas/theatres in Cork including the Savoy, Washington, Pavillion, Lee, and Assembly Rooms in Cork City, and also a cinema and theatre in Youghal. A large number of drawings concern private residences, mainly single detached dwellings. Larger housing projects undertaken include the design of estates at Maryborough, Douglas in the 1950s and 1960s (see ARC1 / 299 – 325 etc.). In terms of public housing, the projects found in the collection concern proposed council housing at Midleton, for Midelton UDC, in the 1930s (See ARC1/108 – /188 etc) and public housing in Youghal (presumably for Youghal UDC) in c.1914 (See ARC1 /150 – /183 etc.). Some drawings are for proposals and alterations which may not have been carried out. The responsible architect’s/engineer’s name does not appear on many of the individual drawings, and when the name appears it is often only in the first drawing of a series relating to the same project. In the case of most working drawings, no name appears. Some architect/engineer names found include Daniel A. Levie, A. Kelly, B. O’Flynn, D.J. Tierney, Eric Carl May, Frank Murphy, James F. McMullen, Moore and Crabtree, Peter S Kay, Robert Walker, Thomas Kelleher and W.H. Hill. Arrangement Reference number order.
