2011/2012 REPORT ON R E S E A R C H SCHOLARSHIP & C R E AT I V E ACTIVITY Message from the Interim Associate Vice President Academic The Annual Report on Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity showcases the diversity and depth of research at MacEwan University and celebrates the contributions made by individuals from all areas of our institution. The large number of student co-authors highlights the commitment of the university to the undergraduate learning experience and the incredible research opportunities available to students through the mentorship of our dedicated faculty. Dr. David McLaughlin Message from the Research Officer In 2011-12, MacEwan University’s research portfolio grew by leaps and bounds. The year heralded the development of the university’s first five-year strategic plan for research, the establishment of an undergraduate student research initiative, and an increase in faculty and student engagement in a variety of innovative research, scholarly and artistic projects. Credit for these successes is due, in large part, to the much valued achievements of faculty whose inspired scholarship featured in this report: • contributes to a strong learning environment, • assists the university to attract and retain high quality students and faculty, • leads to the establishment of research collaborations and partnerships, and • responds to the needs of the communities we serve. On behalf of the Office of the Associate Vice President Academic and Research, we extend thanks to the university research committees for their continuing service and support of research and scholarly projects. Further, for their assistance in preparing this publication, we extend thanks to staff in Research Services, the Faculty Commons, and the administration of our four faculties and schools. To learn more about faculty and student research or to explore opportunities for collaborations to benefit our communities, contact: Meghan Abbott, Research Officer 780-633-3265, [email protected] www.MacEwan.ca/Research All MacEwan University faculty – sessional, probationary, continuing, professional resource and senior officers – are invited to submit their annual contributions for consideration for inclusion in this report. The selection of scholarship highlights the individual contributions of faculty to their various disciplines.
