THE 2003 APPRECIATION RECOGNIZES PHILLIP PETERSON Many Fremonters know Martin Road farmer Phillip Peterson. His family farm stretches mostof Martin Road in Fremont. The animals are visible in every pasture (and sometimes in the roadway!) Many years ago Phillip and his family were snowed in for days ata time when the winter weather was bad. They had to waitfor the old Morrison plow to get there to break down the snow drifts thatwere mighty high in those days. Phillip loves to have people stop by his shop and talk about the good old days of Fremont, and what's happening now and for the future. Phillip is always willing to share his land for local people to enjoy themselves, like for flying planes and the annual snowmobile races. Philip was a Selectman in Fremontfrom 1970 to 1973. Thanks, Phil, for sharing your hearty values and work ethic, your wisdom and thoughts. Thanks for all you have done for Fremont and the people who are your neighbors and friends. Phillip contributed to our Town Report this year with photographs and a story ofthe 1927 Mead-Morrison Tractor. We hope you enjoy this trip back inhistory! 1 Thanks to Phillip Peterson for contributing these history tidbits. He is writing aboutthe 1927 Mead-Morrison tractor thatwas the Town's first snow plow. Mead-Morrison before the repairs ... Dear Folks, Iam the MeadeMorrison tractor that started out in around theyear of1927as the snow plowfor the Town ofFremont, and my home was in the Town Hall down cellar near the river, my breath is still on the ceiling down cellar. Wellfolks, the Town boys had no more usefor me. They said Idug thesefancy roads up too much and sold me to afellow named Charley Page to work in the woods, so Ileftmywarm home afterall the years I spent in Fremont, andall the storms and keeping the townspeople happy, and thatwas all the thanks Igot, so theygot rid ofme. Afterafew years in the woods Charleywanteda bigger machine than me, so back on the road I went again and Iended up in the Kingston dump, pushing the dump. ConradMagnusson wasgood to me, but afterafew years ofthat Conrad decided he needed a bigger tractor with heaters and air conditioners, so there Iwent again. I thoughtIwas on my way to thejunkyard, but no Iwas parked on the side ofa path and there Isatfor another number ofyears, with the trees growing up all around me, bullet holes, engine is struck and in plain words, all gone. One day this oddfellow zvalked by me and a little way down the road he turned aroundand came back andjust stood there and looked at me. While he was looking Conrad came by and asked him ifhe could buy me and Conrad said no, the oddfellow said ifyou ever want to part with me to let him know, so there I satfor afew more years. From what 1 hear, Conrad needed one ofthis oldfellow'sfreight car tanks. Conrad saidhe would let megofor one ofthose tanks. There Iwentagain and landed back in Fremont, up in a pole barn. There I satfor another20 years or so 'til the snow one wintergot so heavy the rooffell in. Then theypulled me out ofthere, to a new barn that was all heated. — Isat in thereforafew months and this other "odd duck" came into the shop withAl Rislove. Al introduced him to the oddfellow who was me whose name is Phil (Peterson), this odd duck looking me over is 'Old' MikeHarneyfrom NorthHampton. Well he wanted to buy me tofix me up andPHIL agreed to let OldMike bringhim down to North Hampton, to his shop so he couldgetmegoing again, guess what, he hasfixed me all upandIlook better then Ieverdid and it seems as though Iwill stay out ofthe yard. Iam suppose to bea BEAR AND MEAD bought out bear and then the caterpillarcame along, before DDTtook over, so that was the end oftheMead-Morrison so there isn't too many ofus left...OLD MIKE HARNEYand PHILLIP PETERSON own me now. OLD MIKE is the one thatgot megoing and boy he surehas done a lot to save me. He takes me around to old tractor shows and they seem to look at me more then the rest.
