Thepresentworkisbasedonthe“EtymologicalDictionary of the RomanceLanguages”byFriedrichDiez(2mledition, Bonn 1801). TheAuthor has, however, availed himselfof the labours ofother eminent writers on the same subject, amongstwhomhewouldspecially mentionWedgwood(Dic- tionaryofEnglishEtymology),Littre(HistoiredelaLanguc franyaise) andMahn(Untersuchungcn aufdem Gobietc der RomanischcnSprachcn). Heisalsoindebtedtovariouspapers in English and Foreign Periodicals, reference to which is made, wheredue. As to the plan ofthe work, the veryinconvenientar- rangement adopted by Diez has been abandoned, and the whole Dictionary reduced to one Alphabet, a Vocabulary being added of suchEnglish words as are connected with anyoftheRomancewordstreatedof. Topreventexcessivebulk, wordsareexcluded: (1)wheretheetymologyisunknown,and (2)whereitissoobviousandfamiliar as to require noexplanation.
