This prestige offering of 1,468 lots brings together a wide range of British, ancient and world coins and includes many notable rarities. The first 353 lots are devoted to the collection of English coins formed by James Anthony Hall, of Prudhoe, Northumberland (pictured right). Born on 18 December 1940 to a second-generation baker at Adderbury, Oxfordshire, James's interest in British coins was kindled in 1960 by his first job, at the Trustee Savi Bank in Banbury. Later Jim (to his friends) took to commerce, serving in senior positions at Procter & Gamble before founding Warwick- based Silbury Marketing Ltd, the food import/export business he grew from nothing to an annual turnover of £1 7 million. He started collecting coins seriously in the mid-1990s, purchasing pieces from a wide variety of sources; to him, the provenance of a piece was important and he kept meticulous records of where and when acquisitions were made. By early 2000 he had joined the British Numismatic Society and two years later he retired from business to pursue full-time his many and * varied hobbies and interests, which apart from numismatics included collecting cactii and shooting. Sadly James passed away on 3 July 2005 but, both in this catalogue and that of his series of Celtic coins sold by DNW on 20 June, he leaves a numismatic legacy which amply demonstrates an astute and methodical approach to the pursuit. Next under the hammer are 107 lots of coins of the mint of Bury St Edmunds, a very significant offering from the same collection as the Long Cross coins of Bury sold by us in March this year. The group is referenced to the forthcoming British Numismatic Society special publication, The Abbey and Mint of Bury St Edmunds to 1279, by Dr R.J. Eaglen, and includes a particularly fine portrait penny of Henry I with a pedigree stretching back to the 18th century (lot 361). The day's first session concludes with British coins from the collection of Robert Seaman, FCIB, who started collecting in 1958. A member of the British Numismatic Society since 1965 and the Society's treasurer from 1973 to 1981, Robert's major interests include the coins of the Norman kings and those minted in his native Essex, of which there are ten in this sale (lots 461-470); his coins also include an attractive Elizabeth I fine sovereign (lot 504). A Charles II pattern crown in gold, of which there are only three specimens believed known (lot 636) is the most valuable single coin in this catalogue. Other gold highlights include the best known example of the earliest English half-noble (lot 550), a James I spur ryal (lot 580), a Charles I pattern unite by Abraham Vanderdort (lot 592), a superb Commonwealth unite that used to belong to Ernest Carter (lot 627) and a beautiful George I elephant and castle guinea, 1 726 (lot 702). A cache of Georgian sovereigns, retained in the family of the vendor since 1825, are followed, for the fifth successive DNW COINEX sale, by an excellent series of Scottish coins, featuring important sterlings of David I and Prince Henry (lots 922-924), a James V bonnet piece, 1540 (lot 951), three portrait testoons of Mary, Queen of Scots (lots 955, 960 and 961), a superb Charles II four merks, 1675 (lot 1001) and a run of Scottish countermarked dollars. Over 350 lots are devoted to ancient and world coins, of which the star item is a South African proof set of 1892 (lot 1313). There is also a Colombian 8 escudos countermarked for use in the Philippines by decree of 1832 (lot 1282) and good series of both German and USA coins.
