USU Repository © 2009 ABSTRAK Skripsi ini berjudul “An Analysis of Adverbs of Manner in Sidney Sheldon`s Morning, Noon and Night and Its Translation into Indonesian by Hendarto Setiadi” membahas tentang penerjemahan kata keterangan cara (adverb of manner) dari bahasa Inggris (SL) ke bahasa Indonesia (TL). USU Repository © 2009 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the Analysis In today's world, communication between different nations with different languages is feasible through translation. Webster` s New World dictionary defines “to translate” as follows: 1. to move from one place or condition to another; transfer; 2. to put into the words of a different language; 3. to change into another medium or form to translate ideas into action; 4. to put into different words; rephrase or paraphrase in explanation; 5. to transmit (a telegraphic message) again by means of an automatic relay (as cited by Yazdunpanuh, 2001:1). Accessed at: http//www.albaglobal.com/article1836.html October 27, 2008; 08:10 PM. Nida and Taber (1974: 4) state, “Anything that can be said in one language can be said in another, unless the form is an essential element of these messages.” This statement gives information that translation can transfer the message from one language to another. The function of translation is conveying the information. In translation, the form of Source Language (SL) has to be changed into the Target Language (TL). As Larson (1984) states, “This is done by going from the form of the first language to the form of a second language by way of semantic structure. It is meaning which is being transferred and must be held constant, only the form changes”. The translation aims to produce the new text which is understood by the people as the original text which is also understood by the reader. Ira Susanti : An Analysis Of Adverbs Of Manner In Sidney Sheldon`S Morning, Noon And Night And Its Translation Into Indonesian By Hendarto Setiadi, 2009. USU Repository © 2009 Catford (1965: 20) defines “Translation as the process of changing a written text from one language (SL) to the other equivalence which is written in another language. He insists that translation is the replacement of textual material in one language (SL) by equivalent textual material in another language (TL)”. Here, it can be seen that Catford emphasizes the equivalent form in translating a text. Because of the equivalence, the idea or message in the SL can be expressed naturally in the TL. Process of the translation is reproducing the natural equivalent of the Source Language (SL) message especially in terms of meaning and style (Nida and Taber 1969: 12) in (Kongres Nasional Penerjemahan 2003: 36). There must be correspondence of meaning between SL and TL. A translator should have a perfect knowledge of the original language, and a competence acquaintance with the subject of which it treats. In fact, it is not easy for the translator to make natural translation and has exactly same meaning with the source language, because every language has different structures or grammar. In translating, there are some rules that must be obeyed by translator. At least the translator must master the SL because every language has its own system. Every language has its own grammatical or structural system in conveying an idea. The translator must be able to transform the structure of SL to the appropriate structure of TL. It means that, the reader and listener can understand about the translation result. Part of speech is very important to make sentences. Maclin (1996: 20) states “Part of Speech in English is traditionally classified into eight parts; they are verb, adjective, noun, pronoun, adverb, preposition, conjunction, and Ira Susanti : An Analysis Of Adverbs Of Manner In Sidney Sheldon`S Morning, Noon And Night And Its Translation Into Indonesian By Hendarto Setiadi, 2009.
