Although care has been taken to make the instructions precise, and national experts have been consulted wherever possible, it should be stressed that the general mood of the dance can be conveyed only through a live performance, and the written instructions can never be a complete substitute. Readers may have seen the dances performed in their native settings in slightly different versions; regional variations in steps and music are often numerous and some dances are performed differently in almost every village. This also applies to the various holds and basic steps which are described at the beginning of the book. The music of all four books has been recorded by the Society. Details of the records will be found at the end of the book. Man's R. arm around girl with hand just below shoulder blades; L. arm comfortably at shoulder height, L.H. holding girl's R.H. Girl's L.H. on man's shoulder. BUTTERFLY MOLD Man stands to the side but a little behind the girl and holds her hands. L.H. in L.H. and R.H. in R.H. slightly above shoulder level. Man moves the girl to the L. side or the R. side turning her slightly towards himself so that they look at each other. 2 HAND HOLD Partners face each other and take both hands L.H. in R.H. and R.H. in L.H. They lean a little away from each other when turning with this hold. 8 BASIC STEPS ISRAELI WALKING STEP (Count 1 and 2 and) Step forwards placing heel on the ground first and relax knee. Straighten knee as the other foot comes forwards on to heel. YEMENITE STEP R. Step on R.F., flex knee. Step to side with L.F. on toe and straighten knee. Step on R.F. YEMENITE STEP L. Step on L.F., flex knee. Step to side with R.F. on toe and straighten knee. Step on L.F. POLKA STEP (Mens Step only) Hop on L.F. Step to side with R.F. Close L.F. to R.F., commencing to turn clockwise. Repeat commencing with hop on R.F. and completing the turn. (Hop, 1,2, 3; Hop, 1,2, 3). WALTZ BALANCE Step to L. with L.F., long step. Close R.F. to L.F., short step. Step on L F on spot short step. Repeat to R. with R.F. ' WALTZ STEP Step forward on L.F., long step. Step to side with R.F., turning clockwise. Close L.F. to R.F. Step forward on R.F., long step. Step to wide with L.F. Close R.F. to L.F. to complete turn. GALLOP STEP - (Chass£) to L. Spring to L. with L.F. Close R.F. to L.F. Repeat. GALLOP STEP - (Chasse) to R. Spring to R. with R.F. Close R.F. to L.F. Repeat. STEP HOP Step onto leading foot and hop on it. Repeat with opposite foot (i.e. step, hop, step, hop, L.F.,L.F.,R.F.,R.F.). CHUG HOP STEP (As in Mexican Dances) The foot slides forward, knee bent and the hop becomes a lift or chug forward. 9 10 BASIC STEPS BOURREE STEPS Progressive Bourree Step When dancing forwards in progression, this is a simple long, short, step, i.e. L.R.L., R.L.R., etc., danced smoothly using the whole foot but with the weight forward on the ball of the foot. This step usually occupies one bar. Forward Bourree Step (Two Bars — 1 — 2 — 3— 4 — 5— 6) Part 1 Bar 1 Beats 1-3 One step forwards with L.F., shoulder leading. Part 2 Bar 2 Beat 1 Step forwards with R.F. still turning to L. Weight on R.F., short step. Beat 2 Step to L. on L.F., short step. Beat 3 Close R.F. to L.F. Backward Bourree Step Part 3 Bar 3 Beats 1-3 One backward step (L.F.) revolving on L.F., turning shoulder to R. for Vi turn. Part 4 Bar 4 Beat 1 Close R.F. to L.F., transfer weight to R.F. Beat 2 Step to L. on L.F. still turning R. Beat 3 Close R.F. to L.F. Variations of this step occur. It can be danced facing front with no shoulder turning as for Girl 1 in Bourree de la Chapelotte. When turning about, the turn is commenced on the last beat of the 1st bar but is principally made during the 2nd bar. FINLAND FIST POLKA 138 Tempo di Mazurka. A FORMATION: Couples in circle facing each other, man inside, girl outside the circle. Two-hand hold. STYLE: Lively. FIGURE 1 A Bar 1 Step for man, girl contra. Commencing with R.F. travel clockwise with one change-step (step-close-step, two beats), leap forwards on to L.F. on 3rd beat. Bars 2-3 Repeat twice. Bar 4 Face each other and stamp R.L.R. A Bars 1-4 Repeat figure moving anti-clockwise and commencing with L.F. Stamp L.R.L. FIGURE 2 B Bars 1-2 Hands on hips, fingers forward. With a jump both dancers place L.F. forward, and with a jump bring L.F. back beside R.F. Bars 3-4 Repeat steps of Bars 1-2 with opposite feet shaking clenched fists. L. fist with L.F., R. fist with R.F. Bars 5-6 Commencing with R.F., each dancer walks five steps in own circle to R., clapping hands five times, stamping on the L.F. on the last beat, and placing hands on hips. B Bars 1-6 Repeat Figure 2. Repeat dance from beginning. 11 BRANLE DE CONNAY FRANCE FORMATION: Men's line facing girls' line about 6 ft away. STYLE: Weight on ball of foot, heels close to floor. Knees slightly relaxed and body weight kept forward. Men have relaxed arms. Girls hold skirts out at side but in front to keep skirt off the knees. FIGURE 1 A Bars 1-2 Couples advance with L. shoulder leading, step L.F., close R.F. to L.F., step on L.F. turning R. Shoulder towards partner, thus facing opposite directions. Bars 3-4 Step to R. with R.F., close L.F., step to R. with R.F. moving towards partner meeting R. shoulder to R. shoulder. Bars 5-8 Repeat steps of Bars 1 -4, returning to place. A Bars 1-8 Figure is repeated. CHORUS Join hands in lines. B Bars 1-4 Moving to L. step L.F., close R.F. to L.F., step L.F., swing R.F. across L.F. Repeat to R. commencing R.F. Bars 5-6 Step L.F. to L. side, swing R.F. across L.F., step R., swing L.F. across R.F. Bars 7-8 Repeat steps of Bars 5-6.
