VII. 1962 PRO SUMMIS IN THEOLOGIA HONORIBUS IN ME CONLATIS SACRUM 1972 K.H. R. PREFACE About twenty years after embarking upon this undertaking, the first volume of A Complete Concordance to Flavius Jo sephus can now be presented. This volume includes the words with the initial letters A - ß. Three more volumes will follow: Volume II, listing the words with the initials E - K, Volume III with letters A- TI, and Volume IV, including letters P - 0. The fourth volume will also include the concordance to the section of Contra Apionem surviving only in Latin (II 51-n3), since the range of this material is too meager to warrant its inclusion in a separate volume. A supplementary volume, N amenwörterbuch zu Flavius J osephus, compiled by Abraham SCHALIT,a ppeared in 1968 as a forerunner to the Concordance. The reasons for this procedure are mentioned in the I ntroduction to the Concordance (p. xiv), and can be referred to there. A second supplementary volume is expected to contain the numerous new or corrected readings which will no doubt arise when the anticipated critical edition of the Opera Flavii Jo sephi appears, following the completion of the Concordance, thus providing a concordance to the new text edition. This volume, however, will not be available for some time. Rather, the printing of Volume II of the Concordance will begin shortly, inasmuch as the manuscript for this volume was completed in 1971. The manuscript of Volume III is nearing completion, and since parts of Volume IV have already been prepared, the remaining volumes of the Concordance will appear rather quickly. The object of this Concordance and the method by which it has been edited are adequately described in the Introduc tion. Users of this work will profit greatly by carefully reading the information given there. The Concordance has been arranged so that it may be used with each of the modern editions of J osephus now available, and will prove all the more useful if the Introduction is studied thoroughly, because it seeks to show the relation of the Concordance to the editions employed in compiling the work. In the immediate circle of workers on this volume, Heinz SCHRECKENBERGed ited the words with the initial letters A and r, and Bernhard JusTus prepared the words beginning with ß. The latter also revised an earlier draft of the words beginning with B. The English translations of the entries in this volume based, like those throughout the Concordance, on the German original, are the work of Erwin BucK. The revision of the manuscript for the printer was done by Bernhard JusTus and myself; Bernhard JusTus and I also read the final proofs. At various times the following persons helped in the preparation of this volume, mainly assisting with its technical aspects: Athanasios FouRLAS, Christoph FRoMMHAGENW, olfgang E. GERBER,F riedrich GRAZ,F rowald HÜTTENMEISTER, Konstantinos KAPETIS, Gotthold KIUNKE, Gustav Adolf KRIEG, Herbert NEUMÜLLERSV, ictor C. PFITZNER, Volker STOLLE,J ohn R. WILCH, and Heinrich WINTERHOFF.O ccasional assistance with the English translations of the Con cordance entries was offered by Arnulf BAUMANNU, lrich GüTING, Paul SCHMIEGEa, nd Edgar W. SMITH,J r. The English renderings of my Pref ace and. I ntroduction to the Concordance were kindly done by William L. WEILER. I express my thanks here to each of those mentioned above for their interest and cooperation. The Minister für Wissenschaft und Forschung des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen has generously supported the work on this Concordance from the very beginning by his provision of the necessary personnel and equipment, thereby making its publication possible. lt gives me pleasure to express my gratitude for everythbg which has been done in this regard. Finally, the publishers, having spared neither expense nor effort in paving the way to bring this work to publication, deserve a warm word of thanks. In this connexion I recall the attentive personal interest and, to be sure, the patience of the firm's director, F. C. WIEDER, Jr., who has seen the Concordance to the press. In dedicating this volume to three renowned centers of theological scholarship and teaching, I hope to convey something of the thanks which I have long owed each of them. May the work presented here be not unworthy of them. Münster, Westfalia Karl Heinrich RENGST0RF The close of the year, 1972
