Research tells us: Extensive reading is critical to the development of reading proficiency. Extensive practice provides the opportunity for students to consolidate the skills and strategies teachers often work so hard to develop. Allington, 2002 Reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing, and representing are closely interrelated. Experiences involving one or more language processes contribute to development in the others. As students develop strategies and proficiency in one aspect of language, they also improve in others. Jeroski, 2005 Knowing this information informs our practice. These short dialogues are intended to help imprint language structures and phrases in an easily digested fashion. How to use the dialogues: Ask the students to read the dialogues in pairs, triads, or groups of four • as a warm-up activity at the beginning of class for 2-3 minutes • as a cool down activity at the end of class • to support the lesson at any time • to help weaker students grasp the flow of concepts and phrases • to challenge stronger students who could be asked to continue the dialogues with new sentences To extend the learning, ask the students to • change some details • write a new ending • change the names of the speakers – their own names or new fictional ones • invent a new dialogue based on the one they have just read 5 Published by Tralco Lingo Fun Copyright © 2008 Helen Coltrinari www.tralco.com . www.lingofun.com ISBN: 9781554095742 50 Short Dialogues   l   e TesT de maThs 2 personnes Marie: Bonjour, Jeanne.
