Even though we didn’t have a hunting dog ourselves, we created many fond memories which I still hold very dear to heart. Through these hunting trips shooting upland birds with my dad, my interest to hunt over a Springer was sparked. It wasn’t until the mid-70s that I was finally given the opportunity to hunt over a Springer. He wasn’t very well trained but he sure had a knack for finding birds. It was at this point that I realized that I needed to get a Springer for myself. Shortly af- ter, I purchased my first Springer, Beau, from Mrs. Ruth Greening, owner of Ru-char Kennels. Ruth helped me train Beau along with Gary Wilson. I placed Beau in a few trials before finally realizing he lacked the necessary speed and style of a competitive field trial dog. I purchased my next dog from Gary Wilson (FC/AFC/CFC Ru-Chars Quick Shot). During this time I also had the privilege of running a bunch of Ruthie’s dogs, FC/AFC Ru-Chars Roger Jr., FC/AFC/CFC Ru-Chars Rise & Shine & AFC/ CFC Ru-Chars Autumn Mist. I will be forever grateful for the help of Ruth Greening for the countless hours that she spent coaching and educating me for years. My next Springer was purchased from Mike Wallace in 1991, NAFC/FC Salmy’s Millie of Ru-Char, winner of the 1994 National Amateur Championship. I retired her in 1995 when I decided to turn pro. I now reside in Blairstown, NJ and own and operate Triple Ridge Sporting Spaniels along with my wife of 33 years, Sue, son Mark & daughter Meg and a kennel full of Springers, Cockers & Labs. These dogs have always been a significant part of my life. I am a dedicated Spring- er lover in every sense imaginable. I have been privileged to have judged two open Nationals and one Amateur National. It is both an honor and a privilege to again have the best seat watching the greatest Springers in the world. —Ralph Botti 2014 Judge Alice Stewart Since 1990, I have had the privilege of running many talented animals in Nation- als in Canada and the United States. Even after championing many dogs, I still experience that sense of excitement, watching the teamwork between handlers and dogs. Having judged three nationals and many trials across Canada and United States, I can express with sincerity, judging is a humble experience. I am honored to be given the opportunity. I understand competition and realize the effort and luck which is required to com- plete five series. I wish all competitors great birds and excellent opportunities. Many thanks to the Springer Spaniel family who made this ‘National ‘possible. —Alice Stewart Best Wishes from the 2014 National Amateur Judges Standard Procedure For Spaniel Field Trials 1. The purpose of a Spaniel Field Trial is to demonstrate the performance of a perfectly trained Spaniel in the field. The performance of a Spaniel in Field Trials should not differ from that in any ordinary day’s shooting, except that in the trials a dog should do his work in a more nearly perfect way. 2. The function of a hunting Spaniel is to walk at heel (or on a leash) until bidden to seek game. When so ordered, he should seek game in a brisk, quiet manner thoroughly quarter- ing the designated cover, within gunshot, in the line of quest without unnecessarily covering the ground twice. When game is flushed, dogs should drop or “hup” to flush or command and, if game is shot, should retrieve at command only, but not until the Judge has instructed the handler. Dogs should retrieve quickly and briskly when ordered to do so and deliver tenderly to hand. They should then drop or “hup” until given further orders. Spaniels which bark and give tongue while questing are objectionable and should be severely penalized. 3. If a dog, following the line of a bird, is getting too far out he should be called off the line and later he should again be cast back on it. A dog which causes his handler and gun to run after him, while line running, is out of control. Handlers may control their dogs by hand, voice, or whistle, but only in the quiet manner that would be used in the field. Any loud shouting or whistling is evidence that the dog is hard to handle, and, in addition, is disturbing to the game. 4. A dog should work to his handler and gun at all times. A dog which marks the fall of a bird, uses the wind, follows a strong runner which has been wounded, and will take direc- tion from his handler, is of great value. 5. When the Judge gives a line to a handler and a dog to follow, this must be followed and the dog not allowed to interfere with the other contestants running parallel to him. 6. The Judges must judge their dogs for game-finding ability, steadiness, and retrieving. In game finding the dog should cover all his ground on the beat, leaving no game in his territory and showing courage in facing cover. Dogs must drop to wing and shot and obey all commands. When ordered to retrieve they should do this tenderly and with speed. No trials for Spaniels can possibly be run without retrieving as that is one of the main purposes for which a Spaniel is used. 7. In judging a Spaniel’s work Judges should give attention to the following points, taking
