The Sage’s Language in the Bible and in Ancient Egyptian Literature Shupak, Nili Abstract: InthecomparativestudyofEgyptianandBiblicalliteratureemphasishasbeenlaidoncontent andideas, whiletheformalandterminologicalaspectshavebeenneglected. Thepresentworkdealswith the semantics of terminology in Biblical wisdom literature as compared to that of the Egyptians and centers, therefore, on a somewhat abandoned aspect of the comparative research of the Biblical and Egyptian writings. The work has three primary objectives: (a) to draw up a glossary of Egyptian wisdom terms, a task as yet not undertaken elsewhere; (b) to elucidate the semantics of these terms; (c) toclarifytheBiblicalwisdomtermsinrelationtotheirEgyptianparallels. Thefreshcomparativeinquiry into Hebrew and Egyptian wisdom vocabulary sheds light on some general problems intrinsic to Biblical wisdom, e.g.: Does the Hebrew sage (hākām) signify a function or a quality? Did Hebrew wisdom evolve from a secular to a religious stage? What was the Sitz im Leben of Biblical wisdom? Federal Republic of Germany and the Schweizerische Gesellschaft für orientalische Altertumswissenschaft Editor: Othmar Keel Coeditors: Erich Zenger and Albert de Pury The Author: Nili Shupak, born in Haifa, studied Old Testament, Egyptology and Archae ology at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem (1967ff.). She spent two years at the Egyptological Institute of the University of Tübingen as a research fellow of DAAD (1978-1979). Dr. Shupak obtained her Ph. D. in Biblical Studies at the Hebrew University (1984). She worked as an Assistant in the Biblical Studies Department at Ben-Gurion University in Beer-Sheba as well as in the Israel Museum in Jerusalem (1968-1973). Since 1975 she teaches at the University of Haifa where she is a Senior Lecturer in the Departments of Biblical Studies and the History of Israel. As a visiting Assistant Professor she taught atthe Jewish Theological Sem inary of America in New York (1989). Her research interests lie in the field of the linguistic, cultural and historical contacts between Ancient Egypt and Israel, on which she has published numerous articles in various periodicals and encyclopaedias. She published as well an lntroduction to the O/d Testament Wisdom Literature in the series «The Open University» (Hebrew) (1990).
