Welford and Weston Local History Society www.welfordandweston.org.uk Newsletter 36 – December 14th 2016 Feedback on our most recent meeting on 25th November Andy Hyam gave us an interesting talk on the discovery of the Iron Age pits in the field where the Barton Meadow development has now been completed. As someone commented to me after the talk, ‘it’s hard to believe that a few (well actually 25) holes in the ground could make such an interesting subject, a credit to the presentation skills of the speaker.’ Again, just short of 50 people attended this meeting including several visitors and five new members (who joined on the evening). We now have 97 members. Our next meeting is on Friday 27th January, and is entitled ‘With the best Will in the world.’ One of our members, John Harris, will talk to us about his work as a volunteer guide at Shakespeare's Birthplace. We will be taken on a fascinating journey through the Shakespeare family home and hear about life in Elizabethan times. Many of the phrases we still use today originate from that time, and John will be sharing them with us. Do you know where the expression 'Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater' comes from? What would cause you to be called a 'loose woman'? Do you know what was the second biggest killer of Elizabethan women? Why is William Shakespeare buried in Holy Trinity Church, and not in the graveyard? Why was his will altered? Come along to our meeting on January 27th and all will be revealed! ******************************************************** Your committee wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy & Healthy New Year. ******************************************************** Rosemary Hale 750682, Sue Hook 751400, Paul King 750123, Brad Plimmer 750716, Doreen Walkden 750436
