HPCN (High Performance Computing and Networking) Europe was organized for the first time in 1993 in Amsterdam as the result of several initiatives in Europe, the United States, and Japan. HPCN Europe events were then held in Munich (1994), Milan (1995), Brussels (1996), Vienna (1997), and it returned Amsterdam in 1998. The HPCN Europe keeps changing its image. HPCN 1999 is a conference and multi- workshop event. At the conference there will be three conference tracks presenting 84 selected papers in the following areas: Industrial and General Applications of I-IPCN, Computational Science, Computer Science, as well as two poster sessions with 40 presentations. Three renowned speakers will present the I-IPCN 1999 keynote lectures: Ralf Gruber (EPFL, Switzerland), Carl Kesselman (Caltech, USA), and Pieter Adriaans (Syllogic BV, the Netherlands). Since research in HPCN is progressing rapidly, newly emerging domains of this field and their present and possible future applications are covered by 13 thematic workshops. Over 40 well-known experts from Europe and the United States participated in the organization of the workshops and have agreed to present invited lectures demonstrating the current trends in their fields of interest. Methods of solving computing-intensive problems are considered at the High Performance Numerical Computations with Applications Workshop and the High Performance Computing on Very Large Data Sets Workshop. The High Performance Data Mining for Large-Scale Data Sets Workshop focuses on algorithms for mining massive/distributed data and on integration of data mining with other systems and applications. Performance measurement, analysis and prediction are the concern of the EuroTools Workshop. The importance of new approaches to efficient and easy use of computer resources is illustrated at the Distributed and MetaComputing Workshop and the Java in HPC Workshop. The Virtual Reality Workshop discusses the state of the art in this rapidly developing domain of presentation of large datasets generated in simulations in industrial and scientific applications. The 1355 Interconnect and Routing Workshop is dedicated to a specific technology of networking. Recent applications of HPCN in medicine are discussed at the Hospital of the Future Workshop and at the second International Mini Conference on Telemedical Information Society. Other practical aspects of HPCN are given much attention at the Traffic Simulation Workshop, the Applications in Finance Workshop, and the Enabling Technology, Hard- and Software Workshop. Some of the papers presented at the workshops are also included in these Proceedings. The papers included in the Proceedings reflect the multidisciplinary character and broad spectrum of the field. We thank all contributors for their cooperation. Due to the vI high quality of almost 200 submitted contributions the selection of papers for oral and poster presentation was not simple. We are very grateful to the reviewers for their efforts in evaluating so many papers in a very short time over Christmas. The best conference papers will be published in a special issue of the journal, Future Generation Computer Systems. The drawing up of an interesting program for the Conference would not be possible without invaluable suggestions and contributions of the members of the HPCN 1999 Program Committee. We highly appreciate the personal effort of the members of the local organizing committee and the conference secretariat. Special thanks to Lodewijk Bos, Karin Zuur, and David Dubbeldam who prepared these proceedings. We would like to express our sincere thanks to the computer support group for setting up the paper submission engine, and Diederik Burer and Martin Bergman for creating the HPCN Europe web pages. We would like to thank Piotr Luszczek and ACC CYFRONET for help in collecting review reports. The organizers acknowledge the help of the Dutch HPCN foundation, the Dutch Organization for Scientific Research, the University of Amsterdam, and the council of the city of Amsterdam for supporting the event. FinaLly we thank all the attendees and contributors to the conference who made this conference and multi-workshop a high quality event!
