President's Message DR. HOWELL C. GARNER College President I am pleased to welcome you to Copiah-Lincoln Community College, I trust that your visit will be an enjoyable one. Our coaching staff is dedicated to providing the best training for our athletes and to providing an opportunity for them to learn and practice good sportsmanship while they enjoy the sport in a com- petitive manner. Both coaches and players have worked hard to prepare for the season. In addition, our band, cheerleaders, and other support groups have also worked hard to prepare for a great sea- son for all sports. I ask that you support all of these groups through your attendance and enthusiasm throughout the year. For many years Co-Lin has had a rich tradition of successful sports programs. This tradition has been established by hard work and dedication, as well as talent, on the part of coaches and student ath- letes. CO UK Coaching Staff GWYN YOUNG Athletic Director Women's Basketball Serving the college as athletic director since 1989, Gwyn Young has been head coach for the Lady Wolves basketball team for 21 years. Since coming to Co-Lin, he has seen his team win title after title and has compiled a record of 436 wins and 149 losses to rank him in the top winningest NJCAA coaches in the nation. TheLadyWolvesaccomplishmentsduringCoachYoung's stayhavebeen numerous: 13 regular season 1st place finishes, 7 South Division Championships, 11 State Tournaments Appearances, State Championships in 1993 and 1997, Runner-up State Champions 1983 and 1984, Runner-up Region XXIIIChampionships in 1990 and 1996, RegionXXIII Champions in 1989, 1993, and 1997, National Tournament appearances in 1989, 1993 and 1997. Coach Young's team finished 4th in the 1989 National Tournament and has been Nationally Ranked consistently at Co-Lin. Youngwasnamed RegionXXIIICoachoftheYearin 1989, 1993 and 1997. Coach oftheYearhonors were also receivedby CoachYoung from the MACJC and the MAC in 1993. Young has also been named a Clarion-Ledger Coach of the Year forJunior Colleges on numerous occasions. Young also serves as a mathematics instructor. He holds an associate of arts degree from Co-Lin, a bachelor's degree from Mississippi College, and master's degree from the University of Southern Mississippi. Young is married to the former Velesta Smith, and they have two children, Lane, age 21, andJessica, age 18. BROOME PHILLIP Head Football Coach Phillip Broome is in his third year as head football coach for the Wolves. His 1995 Wolves posted an 8-2 recording earning him and his coaching staff "Coach of the Year" honors. Broome and his staff were also selected to coach the 1995 south community col- lege all-stars, winning 23-7 over thenorth squad. Last year Broome's Wolves posted a 7-3 record. Broome served as defensive coordinator for five years prior to being named head football coach in 1995. He was a member of the coaching staff in 1989 and 1990 when the Wolves were South State Champs. Broome is alsoemployed as ascience instructor, receiving theNISODaward forexcel- lence in teaching in 1994. He earned his bachelor of science and master of science degrees from the University of Southern Mississippi. He is married to the former Cynthia Batson, and they have two sons, Tyler, 10, and Caleb,5. DAVID CROSS Assistant Football Coach Inhis fourthyearas an assistantfortheWolves, David Cross serves as defensivecoor- dinator and defensive line coach. From 1991 to 1993 he served as head football coach and athletic director atGreensboroHighSchoolinGreensboro,Alabama. While there the team posted a 22-8 mark and advanced to the state playoffs in all three years. Cross also spent threeyears as defensive coordinatoratMarionInstituteand two yearsatMississippi State with Coach Rocky Felker. He earned a bachelor of science degree in physical education and later received his master ofeducation degree, all fromMississippi State University. Additional studies were completed at Blinn College and Livingston University. A Starkville native, Cross is married to the formerSherryTanksley ofLouisville. They have two children, Kristen Nicole, 9, and James Kyle, 4. Coaching Staff CALVIN M. GREEN HIfhShlfmSHlHlfHfIl Assistant Football Coach UPP^^^^l; Calvin M. Greenjoined the coaching staffat Co-Lin inJanuary, 1994. Green graduated from Monticello High School and attended Copiah-Lincoln Junior College afterhigh school. He graduated fromAlcornState University. He served as assistant defensive back coach at East Mississippi Community College at Scooba for two years from 1992 and 1993 under the former Mississippi State All American and NationalFootball League standoutTomGoode. Greenalso didhis practice coaching at Lawrence County High School. At Monticello High School he was a three-year letterman defensive back. At Co-Lin hewasamemberofCoachRayIshee'sstatechampionshipandEastBowlchampionsteam in 1985. In 1986, he receivedhonors as most valuable defensiveback,AllState,All Region XXIII and waschose for theAll-Star team. AtAlcornStatehe was a lettermanin 1987 and a member of the nation'sbest secondary in 1988. He is married to the former Falana Armstrong and they are parents of a small son, Farrod. CHARLES SUTTON Assistant Football Coach For 14 years, wide receiver coach Charles Sutton has been providing leadership as a member oftheWolves coaching staff. While associatedwiththeWolfpack,hehas seen the Wolves capture the state title in 1985, and has seen the team capture the south division crown in 1986, 1989, and 1990. Sutton served as assistant track coach in 1987, when the team won the state title. He also currently serves as counselor for the college'sUpward Bound program, a positionhe has held for 15 years. BeforejoiningtheCo-Linstaff, Suttonworked as aclassroomteacherandcounselorin the Lawrence County School System. He earned his bachelor of science degree from Alcorn State University, and he has a Master of Education fromJackson State University. Sutton and his wife, Evelyn, have two sons, Victor, 24, and Renard, 19. RICKEY CLOPTON Assistant Football Coach A native ofWesson, RickeyCloptonhas 19years ofcoachingexperience withstintsat Ocean Springs, Terry, and Wesson. He served as a head coach for 18 of the 19 years with 14 atWessonHighSchool. RickeyhasbeenprincipalatWessonAttendanceCenterforfive years and serving as volunteercoach forthis time atCopiah-LincolnCommunityCollege. Clopton holds a Bachelor of Science in Education from Delta State University and a Master of Education degree fromJackson State University. CloptonismarriedtotheformerMaryPettigrew.Theyhavetwochildren,Tommy,23, and Michelle, 16. DAVID SMITH Women's Softball Coach Thisis the5thseasonasheadcoachwithalifetimerecordof110and52. Histeamhaswon enough tobe able to compete in the state tournamentineach ofthe last5 seasons. Two of the best five years (1993 & 1995) the Lady Wolves won the state tournament and David was voted coach ofthe year in 1994 and 1996. ALoyd Star native, David graduated from Co-Lin in 1980 and from the Universityof Southern Mississippi in 1982. He later received his masters in education administration fromJackson State University. He and his wife, the former Ramona Higdon, have two children, Justin, 12, and Lauren, 10. Coaching Staff DENNIS SIMS Men's Basketball Coach Dennis Sims is inhis second yearas men'sbasketball coach for the Wolves. His 1996- 97 Wolves posted an 22-7 record, while finishing first during the regular season in South Division play. Sims was named "Coach of the Year" this past season by the MACJC and the MAC. Sims also received this same honor in 1989 while coaching at Southwest Mississippi Community College. Anative ofWestMemphis,Arkansas,Sims' spenttwelveyearscoachingatSouthwest MississippiCommunity College winning theSouth State Championship in 1989. Sims has also coached eleven years on the high school level winning two state championships and fourover allstate titles. Heearnedabachelorofsciencedegree in PhysicalEducationfrom the University of Mississippi, and a master's degree in education from William Carey College. Sims is married to the former Ginny Johnson ofYazoo City, and they have four chil- dren, Law, 21, Casey, 18, Mary Kathryn, 9, and Mollie, 6. KEITH CASE Baseball Coach InhissixthseasonasheadcoachoftheWolfpackbaseballteam, KeithCasehas turned the Co-Lin baseball program into one of the most competitive in the state. The Wolfpack have setschoolrecords twice for anumberofwins ina season in the last fouryears under Case. Case also teaches in the mathematics department at Co-Lin. He earned a bachelor of science degree in physical education and a minor in mathematics from Mississippi State University in 1983. He received his master ofeducation degree with emphasis in physical education from William Carey College in 1989. In 1991, he received his master of educa- tion with emphasis in mathematics from William Carey College. He has done additional workfrom Mississippi College and the University ofSouthernMississippi. During the time since Case became head baseball coach there have been many changes in the physical plant of the baseball program. Sullivan Field has become a "Sparkling Diamond" with the addition of new stadium grandstands, modern pressbox and media area, sound system, restrooms and concessions. Anup to date netbackstophas added to the viewing pleasure for allbaseball fans that attend Sullivan Field. Anative of Tryus, Case graduated from Monticello High School in 1979. He is married to the former Susan Caffey of Jackson, and theyhave one daughter, Macie Marie Case, 6. MIKE McINTYRE Tennis Coach AUSPTR-certifiedtennisteachingprofessionalwithacareerdualmatchrecordof270 wins and 43 losses over 19 seasons at Co-Lin, Mike Mclntyre has been named MACJC "Coach ofthe Year" five times and NJCAA Region 23 "Coach ofthe Year" four times, while watching his Wolves win five state and four regional team championships, plus 17 other teamhonors. Hehascoached64individualstateand regionalchampionsandhashadnine teams ranked in the NATIONAL TOP 25 ('86 women, '87 women, '88 men, '89 men, '90 men, '91 men, '93 men, '96 men, and '97 men). The undefeated (24-0) 1990 team was the firstMississippi team to ever finish in the "TOP 10" in the NJCAAnationals. Mclntyre also serves as chair of the business division, teaches economics, and is an advisor to CL's very active Phi Beta Lambda chapter. As a student at Copiah-Lincoln he was selected to the MississippiJuniorCollegeAll-Star football teamand was a member of a Wolfpack state championship track team while earning his associate of arts degree. He earned bachelor of science and master of business administration degrees from the University of Southern Mississippi. He has done additional work at USM, Mississippi College, Memphis State University, University ofUtah, University of South Carolina, University of Texas-Arlington, and Dennis Van der Meer's Tennis University at Hilton. Mclntyre is married to the former Diane Payne, and theyhave one son, Michael,Jr., 17. Coaching Staff BOB RICKETTS Assistant Baseball Coach Bob Ricketts worked with the offensive line for five years, and he served as offensive coordinator from 1985 through 1988 for football. Ricketts saw the Wolves win the south division in 1986, 1989, and 1990, plus seeing the team capture,the state, region, and East Bowl championships in 1985. In 1975, Ricketts was named NCAADivision IISouthern Baseball Coach of the Year as head coach at Southeastern Louisiana University. Ricketts was also SLU's offensive coordinator. He holds a bachelor of arts degree from SLU and a master of science degree from the University ofSouthern Mississippi. Ricketts is married to the former Shirley Allen, and they have three children, Susan Trahan, Bobby Ricketts, Jr., and Jim Ricketts. Ricketts is a proud grandfather. RONNY ROSS Golf Coach Servinghis second term atthe Co-Lincampus, RonnyRosstookthereigns as the golf coach and head golf professional for Co-Lin's beautiful Wolf Hollow Golf Club. Before joining the Co-Lin staff, Ross worked as assistant golf professional at Oak Harbor Golf Ivlili Club inSlidell, La. While there, he earnedhis ClassAPGAstatus and also served as assis- tant golfcoach to Pope John Paul High School. He earned a marketing and professional golf management degree from Mississippi State University in 1992. He married his high school sweetheart and former Co-Lin cheerleader, Elizabeth Marquett Ross, and they have one son, Jacob Wariner. '™ "l".." ' '., .'.." The return of women's tennis to Co-Lin last year proved to be a valuable learning experience for the entire team. The team was nominated forAcademicAll-American honors. Four of the six team members will return for the '97-'98 season with the addition offour promising new additions. Smith also serves as an instructor and the chairperson for the Physical Education Department. She earned her associate of art degree from Cloud County Community College (Concordia, KS) as well as abachelor of science and master ofeducation degrees from Mississippi College. Before joining the Co-Lin coaching staff, she was the tennis coach at Wingfield H.S. (Jackson, MS) for three years. Her teams won two city champi- onships and she coached a two-time Boys Singles champion. This summer she became a certified professional of the USPTR.
