SNOWon the beach did not deterthe brave swimmers at Porthcawl’s 46th Christmas Morning Swim. With snow still standing above the high water line and in bright winter sun, more than 606 regis- tered swimmers took the traditional Christmas morning dip in the sea at Sandy Bay, Porthcawl, while an estimated 2,000 to 3,000 spectators cheered them on. Porthcawl Coastguards signaled the start and cleared a path down the crowded beach for the swimmers. The procession was led from the Hi-Tide Inn to the beach by Mayor, Coun Mary Emment-Lewis and her consort Bobbie, who both went into the sea. They were joined by Victor Davies and Chris Hughes each with 40-plus swims to their name. Swimmers from all over the UK took part, and among the regular entrants was veteran swimmer Ken James of Ogmore Vale – the oldest entrant at 84 and with 32 previous Christmas swims to his credit. At the other end of the age spectrum there were many young children and their parents taking part. Collections were made during carol singing and during the swim itself. Coming all the way from Ruislip in Middlesex to take part was the brother of the landlord of The Ancient Briton, Rick Newman. His 12-year-old daughter Lucy also braved the waters and the pair have raised £700 so far. The spokesperson for the swim committee, Ian Stroud, said: “Once again we have been grateful to all who supported our swim and the number of people who turned up was fantastic, considering the freezing conditions. I checked my garden ther- mometer at 9am and it showed minus 10C. “I was concerned about what effect the cold would have on our numbers, with many events cancelled this year due to snow and ice, but the number of swimmers far exceeded our expecta- tions.” Chairman, Nicola Willis commented: “As a small committee we are delighted the way we have been supported once again this year. “I would like to thank all swimmers, spectators, individuals, businesses and organisations who help in so many ways to make the swim such a success- ful event in the town’s calendar.” Thursday, January 6th, 2011 Thank you for saying you saw it in The GEM THE GEM - 7 P Blue skies but freezing temperatures as local swimmers ‘enjoy’ Porthcawl’s Christmas dip Christmas Swim photos on this page are by MANDY THOMAS (Available for purchase, telephone 07974 518347) These and other pictures of the event can be viewed on www.mandythomasphotography.co.uk Above (left to right): Ken James, Victor Davies, and Chris Hughes – more than 112 Christmas swims between them! A t Christ College Brecon we work hard to create an environment in which pupils can be happy, grow in confidence and maturity, and thrive academically and in every otherway. We pride ourselves on the pursuit of excellence and on encouraging ourpupils to find and develop their talents and to prepare forthe world beyond school. We know that academic results open doors, so we are committed to helping every individual maximise their achievement in this area. This year’s school leavers were the first to challenge for the new A* grades at Alevel and they tackled this in style with 26% of all Alevel grades achieving the challenging A* top grade. The 2009/10 Alevel results were the best ever seen at the school with 78% of all grades achieving A*-B grade. The GCSE results were equally impressive with 100% of pupils achiev- ing A*-C grades in the core subjects of English, Maths and Science. No fewer than 59% of grades in all subjects achieved an A* or Agrade too. However, we also believe that education takes place everywhere a pupil goes and not just in the classroom. High pupil participation rates in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, the extremely pop- ular Combined Cadet Force and our pupils’successes in the sporting, music and drama arenas are evidence of this. At Christ College, education is about learning with enthusiasm and enjoyment; it is about living and growing in a culture where every individual counts and where staff and pupils are passionate about what they do; it is about challenges and adventures of every sort; all conducted in the safe environment of our inspiring campus on the out- skirts of the vibrant market town of Brecon.
